No Title

Now this authentic that all of us have to get our PCC done for Jan 2002, Has Chennai consulate announced anything to that effect.
What is the format of the PCC

My lawyer sent me the following info!

Regarding your question, although the consular website does not specify whether or not a police certificate is required for residents of India, the new Packet III documents being issued from the National Visa Center state that at the immigrant visa interview, all applicants will have to provide police certificates for every locality in which they have resided since the age of 16 years old. Following is the information available for obtaining police certificates in India:

POLICE RECORD
Police Clearance Certificates may be obtained at the local passport issuing office. They are usually more dependable than those obtained at a local level, and would indicate that the subject had no serious criminal conviction on record. This is because the Government of India is concerned that criminals not obtain passports, and for this reason requires that criminal convictions be reported to passport authorities. (Taken from http://travel.state.gov )

Well guys, this confirms that
1. PCC will be required from now on.
2. From every locality you lived in since 16 years of age OR from the local passport issuing authority in India.
3. The best place to get a comprehensive one is from the Indian consulate in the US.

Chicago folks, it is impossible for us to get one from the consulate here as it takes three months. I am going to get a PCC from my local police station. However, I lived in only one location after 16 years of age, so that should work. Well, I was actually away for one year just when I turned sixteen. So again, this is confusing.
I will try to get a letter from my lawyer saying that Chicago consulate takes three months and I have lived in a single locality for most of my time. I hope this will work.
Good luck to all.

Some more correspondence

My question to my attorney:
Given the fact that the Chicago Indian consulate takes 3 months to issue a PCC and I lived in only one locality/community in India since 16 yrs of age before I came to the US, do you think it will suffice to get a PCC from local authorities from my community in India.
Also, can I expect your office to issue a letter to this effect? I can
give you a phone number for the Chicago consulate to call and verify the 3 mos. claim.
All help in this regard will be appreciated.

The reply:
It should be fine to get a PCC directly from the local authorities for your community in India, as the consulate would be getting the information from them anyways.

This means local PCC is acceptable!!
I don\'t think getting PCC from a local passport issuing authority would be that big a deal. Two days max!!

Local passport authority also states 45 days to get a PCC.

Looks like they in turn request the info from the local police authorities, hence the delay.

Maybe we have a faster option by going TATKAL. I wonder if TATKAL is an option for PCC.

Its actually Taktal and not Tatkal

Taktal in Hindi means "immediately" a fast-track option to issue passports, dont know if it works for PCC\'s too.

I am just posting all info as it gets available to me. I am not sure I can answer your question.
The best thing to do at this point seems to be to get a PCC so that it does not become a gating item at the interview.

gabbar

Actually tatkal means immediately ;)
Thanks for the info abt the fast pp processing option, I was not aware of it. I don\'t know if they do a police check for that though.

Mj1, I totally agree with you on this count

We will do whatever we can about PCC. And pray to god, that it is not reqd., even if we had obtained it fully :).
