Traveling Outside the US As Asylee applicant ,Asylee,LPR through Asylum

Your RTD has both your Alien number and passport number which are not the same. Unfortunately you can’t know what the passport number will be before it’s delivered. When did you apply for RTD?
Thank you very much! I applied December 28, 2023. I got approved on Feb. 13, 2025, but I have not received the card yet. They haven't even mailed it yet.

Funny thing is, when I applied for visas they always used my A number as my document number.
I tried to apply to two different embassies at the same time. The Italian embassy does not require it to make appointments, but the Turkish embassy does not let me make an appointment without it.

I don’t think Italy requires visa for RTD but turkey you’ll have to wait till it’s in your hands. If it’s produced already then it’ll take 1 week to arrive. If not produced then you’ll have to wait. Hope you get it soon

I appreciate your help. You are right! I receieved my RTD yesterday in the mail. I didn't get any status updates or notifications like with my GC, but it arrived anyway and I am grateful that it did.

Italy does require a visa for RTD.

Italy does require a visa for RTD.
Absolutely! Also while struggling to make a visa appointment with the Italian consulate, I found out that in one of the stages, they do ask for the RTD number. In conclusion, both Italy and Turkey do require the RTD number to make an appointment.

Please help!

I know that for Schengen visas, we have to get our visa from the Schengen area country we will spend the most time in. It is almost impossible to make a visa appointment for Italy. My question is what will happen if I get a visa from another schengen area country that has a less busy consulate and then travel to Italy? Will they find out where I stayed the longest? What happens if they find out?

FYI, my husband travelled to Netherlands as with RTD we don’t need a Schengen visa , from there he went to Spain , and then Italy no issues and the he came back from Netherlands with no issues at all.

Thank you! I have heard that they stop random people at checkpoints. It is risky.

You only want to go to Italy in Schengen? Usually, if you are visiting several countries you can indicate the most time in one of the countries and apply for a visa through their consulate, and then change your itinerary to what you wanted initially while STILL visiting the country that issued the visa (and ideally flying into that country at the start and/or end of the trip), but when you just visit one country it could be construed as visa shopping. Any chance you can combine Italy with Switzerland or something?

There's no guarantee they won't cause trouble. He was lucky, but others might not be. Getting in trouble on an RTD might be difficult, because if you need consular assistance, the US might not be that forthcoming.

Thank you! This is exactly what I am thinking. Get a visa from a neighboring country such as switzerland or france, enter and exit there, even stay a couple of days in that country, then spend the rest of the time in Italy where my niece is graduating. I don't think this is going to cause me any trouble.

I tried again to make an appointment with the Italian embassy today. It is a nightmare. The site keeps crashing. I don't think I will ever be able to make an appointment with them.

I think your husband was lucky. I just don't want to risk because I have an elderly person with me.

Is traveling outside in the near future advisable with GC and RTD if one's country is included in the travel ban (not fully banned but either orange or yellow)?

Hi guys I have a weird question. I’m an Asylee that got approved less than 1 year ago with no GC and I recently came back to the US after a trip to Europe to see my family member (not COP). This was my second trip back to the US after asylum grant and ofc used my RTD. First time all went smooth and secondary inspection just asked me 2 questions: where was I and for how long. This time it was faster and they only asked for my address. Upon arriving home I noticed that however this time my RTD was stamped with the following ( although first time it wasn’t stamped). Should I be worried? I’m the main applicant and have no dependents. Has anything similar ever happened to you guys?

How were you able to obtain an RTD so fast? Did you expedite it?
