"Talking points" while calling your lawmakers

Based on AILA's sample message sent during the Byrd amendment voting, here is a sample phone call that you can make to your lawmakers. Feel free to edit

"I am a concerned constituent calling to urge Senator ( name ) / Congressman (name) / Congresswoman (name) to vote for section 8001 of the Senate Deficit Reduction Omnibus Reconciliation Act. This would help bring into effect action taken by the Senate Judiciary Committee to increase revenue by recapturing authorized, but never used, visa numbers for foreign workers with key skills in jobs for which U.S. workers are not available.
The House version of this would raise the fees on L-1 intra-company transferees to $1,500 per visa, which would discourage overseas companies from opening plants in the U.S. and would encourage countries to retaliate against U.S. companies seeking to transfer U.S. managers to oversee their international operations.
Please vote for section 8001 of the Senate version when this comes up for consideration in the conference committee. If not, the country will lose the opportunity to raise revenue by allowing the use of visas that were authorized by Congress, but never used due to administrative delays."

I did see the faxes on their website. But that is mostly for H1bs. If you can research it a lil more that wud be awesome. Also a face to face meeting always helps. If you guys DO end up going, remember to educate them abt chain migration. They will tell u that sometimes 1 H1b will bring in as many as 20 more, ask them for specific examples, if ur right there. Educate them that it is NOT POSSIBLE, unless the guy has one wife and 19 kids. You can ONLY bring dependants here, NOT EVEN ur Parents!! Try and politely ask them for specific cases when they give u "numbers". We desperately need to educate them abt the MAJOR difference between an illegal immigrant from wherever and a HIGHLY educated/skilled person here. Also pls point out that even though many skilled workers have lost jobs, there are still MANY unfilled openings due to shortage of certain skills. Try and mention that if they dont allow legal immigration, jobs will leave the US.

I think some of you guys down in VA shud pls go and meet NumbersUSA. I have a strong feeling it WILL make a +ve difference.

Nozdam,

NumbersUSA sees every H1B holder as a pipeline greencard immigrant. And when such a green card holder (ex-h1b) becomes a citizen after the next 5 years, he or she is eligible to apply for immigrant petitions for his/her parents, brothers/sisters. And this is what NumbersUSA cites for 'Chain Migration' / extended family immigration.

Though I appreciate your efforts to educate NumbersUSA, this is not the time to do it since we hardly have a week left to go. I personally don't think they would change their views on immigration, based on their antecedants. Asking them to support us (immigrants) is like asking them to abandon their very charter - immigration reduction. Also, I do not want to give NumbersUSA too much credit by making them big. No one can talk sense to people like Tom Tancredo.

And someone was talking about NumbersUSA's 'pro-immigrant' stance and diverse ethnic membership. Yeah, right - If you count in people like Michelle Malkin. These are words that they use to avoid being called racist and get sued for libel.

Ignore NumbersUSA and just continue faxing/calling Congressmen. That's our only hope at the moment.

The 'White House' is on record that they support the 'immigration' provisions of this bill, ONLY if the money collected goes to programs for 'HomeLand Security' and not to non-immigration related programs. So trying to exploit Katrina affected people will not only fly but is also unethical. Also, the conservatives in Congress take their cue from the White House. So even if the Churches and people in the affected areas call their representatives, they would soon find out that money collected by this increased/recaptured visa program cannot be apportioned to Katrina relief.

How about these additional details

Guys,
All these efforts are great. But just going to back the ppt presentation, how about adding another slide with details such as
1. We, the legal residents contribute to the economy at a minimum of $3 Billion (at least 200000 pros @ average of salary of $60K, take 25% of this salary towards taxes &Social Security which is $15000. Mutliplied by 200,000 gives $3 Billion at the very least). This is apart from our investment (some of us bought homes as well) and spending in this country. For Example buying a car such as Accord or Camry etc;
2. I believe that members of congress and senate will be more convinced with some realistic numbers such as $3 Billions.
3. Considering the short time we have infront of us, can somebody make any suggestion how to put up these details in much efficient manner
Confidently i'd like to say we can win this, provided a little more work is done

Thanks
Satya

Go to the media but pl. leave Katrina alone

I agree with another post that mentioning benefits to Katrina victims etc. is tantamount to exploiting them for our needs. IMHO Advertising about the benefits of immigrants (job creation), contribution to the economy, increased taxes, funding into social security accounts, reduction in surmounting US deficit etc. is all fine, but mentioning Katrina is really off the track here.

Guys , Please do not be over enthusiatic as you all know this budget peposal has very small point of immigration clause and it will get sneaked with other big
clause so if you make it highly visible to big group it may get worse then before so I suggest we should try our efforts behind the screeen . We should conthinue contacting congressman not media .

Media

Going to media directly will boomrang. What do the media and the avg folks on street who read newspaper care about Greencards and immigration, they do nto care anyless.

Look at it from elections point of view, it is the rural and poor votes that count. (many elections were lost inspite of lot of educated people benefitting) take chandrababu's case !

I totally aggre with Catch_22.
Please focus on the issue. We dont have much time (Only few hours). Contacting conference committee members is crucial at this point. Faxes are OK but calling their office will give us big impact. Briefly explain as per powerpoint presentation prepared by Sunjoshi (wonderful work). While talking request their email and send powerpoint presentation. This PP presentation is enough to convince them and enough to clear misconcept, if any.

Please guys be united, be focused for our common goal. If we could able to talk all conference member, we will be in win win situation.

Please don't wait, pick up the phone and call possible conference members (They will pay more attention, if person is calling from their state). Please don't forget to post your response.

Good luck guys

The immigration bill introduced by House of Representative F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. The bill will be brought on the floor in the next week. Sensenbrenner wants to clear border and security issue first before they take the illegal immigration. There is nothing for legal immigrants like us unless someone bring an amendment to the bill by Monday.

s1932 - 8001 how can I get such benefits?

Hi,

Please if s.1932 /8001/8002 passes, and 90,000 EB visas got released, I485 can be filled even if dates are not current, EAD can also be requested.

What are the requirments one should meet to get those benefits? How soon can those benefits are going to be legally ready for use? are 90,000 unleashes visas enough to cover current demand?

I am South American electronic engineer affected by the retrogressed dates.

thx

Benefits would be eligible the second the President signs the bill into law. Inorder for you to be eligible, you should have be the beneficiary of an approved permanent alien labor certification and must have applied for I-140.
