I have a doument my lawyer sent me all the posible sitiuation about this. See the attachment.
 
vkml is right.

as long as u have a valid H1 u can travel with it, AP is required if u are using an EAD.
  if you have a H1 and travel out and enter using an EAD & AP, then you are supposed to be in EAD status, you are no longer in H1B status.

I travel often to toronto, no problems :)
