One more example on how skewed the immigration laws in this country

ICE just wants to run up statistics to show that they are deporting more and more people. They behave as if they get paid by the number of deportations.

They need intelligence and effort to catch the ones who come here by sneaking over the border. So they go after the easy targets ... the truthful people with one small ancient blemish on their record which they were honest enough to confess, or people who made an honest mistake when filling out a form. No need to chase them down, all they have to do is look through their paperwork to find something.

for those of you who are Civil War buffs, you should know that many generals who fought for the south had their u.s. citizenships revoked. one famoust example is general robert e. lee, who lost his citizenship after joining the confederates.

it should be noted that general robert e. lee's u.s. citiznship was not restored to him until 100 years after his death!

so the moral of the story is, do not start another u.s. civil war and fight for the other side, or your u.s. citizenship(native-born or naturalized) will be revoked by the united states government!

It's not - I suspect it's to deter fraud since they're sending out so many checks in such little time.

Why? If you're married filing jointly you are eligible to get the extra money whether she has an SSN or not, you just have to wait to file your 2008 taxes.

Well, this is truely fucked up. Back in July when my stimulus check went missing I called IRS and asked about that. They told me not to worry - in 2009 I would get it as a credit on 2008 taxes. Well, the time to file taxes have come but I don't see the credit. So I called IRS again and whadya know... the government lied to me - I am not eligible to get the stimulus in 2008 either because my wife doesn't have SSN. My wife cannot get her SSN because State Department has been dragging her IR visa since May 08.

I do want to see the law Bush signed where it says that families like mine are not eligible to get the stimulus. We've been paying US taxes as joint filers on income from abroad as well as US since 2003 and I am US Citizen btw and to me it looks like IRS is just stealing from me.

Does she have a TIN (Tax Identification Number?)

Hmm, I re-call that I got an SSN that had printed something about additional stuff needed to work in the US. But that was about 16 years ago.

I did get that w/o any problem and no visa.

Many others do not qualify. My wife and I are both citizens and both have SSNs and we simply do not qualify. All we could do was bite the bullet and move on!!!

That's not right ... it you have a valid SSN, you should have received your check. We received ours. I filed a few returns who were on GC an they received theirs to. This stimulus check was time consuming to find out what happened to them when clients would not receive it. One occasion, it was sent and deposited to a wrong person. Others had their check applied to money they owed to IRS or just found out they owed. Also, I read that the stimulus would be applied to child support if its owed. Do you have account transcripts? If they issued it and either sent it out to us or applied it somewhere, it will show on the account transcripts.

Geese, so much red tape ... I'm sorry

There have been plenty of naturalized Americans who've risen to great heights (e.g. Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger, and more recently, Madeleine Albright).

Will there be discrimination against you? Quite possibly so. And you'll have to fight against it. Heck, in India I would be discriminated by Raj Thackeray's goons if as a South Indian I went to Maharashtra... so discrimination is not a white only phenomenon or restricted to the US only. (apologies to non Indians who don't get the context of what I'm saying).

I think you've got to give back to the country as well. No one expects an Indian's skin to turn white overnight or his accent to change, but you can and ought to respect, adapt to, and participate in the local culture while still maintaining your own sense of identity.

In short -- yes, you won't be able to run for President. You may endure some discrimination. Minorities who were born in this country do so day in and day out, and nevertheless one of them rose to the highest office. You may yet get to a cabinet level post if you have it within you :)

With all that said, and even with the recession, is this a great place to be? Absolutely.

Triple Citizen, you are correct :) that's a goofy thing ;) there was suppose to be a catch up on the 2008 return for people who have not received who were high and low income. Surprise, when the forms came out, the catch up is only for low income earners. It's sad ... based on the information we received last year, we told our high income earners that they may qualify for the catch up, especially with the recession ... unfortunately some would benefit from it.

MagnaHoy, I agree. Last time I went home, I had an English accent on my French, lol. I did not get treated good by some people. It made me sad to see how many people discriminate for no reason
