1 & 2: Use your discretion.Hi, @Sm1smom!
We use the sample i-485 to fill our forms, but some things are unclear (perhaps we overthink them). Sorry for so many questions.
Generic questions w.r.t. i-485:
My wife's i-485 questions (she is the winner):
- Employment History: Do I put my employer's data as it appears in my W2? W2 has a different address than my actual office address.
- What should I put in Section 14 for add'l information on my employment history for the "Item Number"? Same question for various organizations in Part 8.
- My parents (well, I am also) were born in USSR (in the part of it that's Russia now). Should I put USSR or Russia?
- Similarly, my partner's parents were born in USSR but in a region that is an independent country right now. Should it be USSR or the country's name today?
- Should we fill in the A-number at the top of each page?
My i-485 questions (I am a derivative applicant).
- Part 1, Q9 Nationality — I have two citizenships. Should I put both or one I used to enter the US?
- Part 1, Q16: issue a new SSN card. Is it okay to mark "Yes" here? Is my understanding correct that I can mark "Yes" to get the new card automatically? Alternatively, I can mark "No" and then request a new one myself, right?
- Part 1, Q22: My visa number is M<7 digits>. Is the letter M also a part of the "nonimmigrant visa number"?
- Part 1, Q25.a: I am a J1 Ph.D. student. My i94 states -- "Class of Admission: J1".
- Similarly, Q26.c -> J1? Why is the answer in sample i-485 N/A?
- Part 2, Q3 to Q9 (Information About Your Immigrant Category). I am a bit confused here. Are those questions applicable to DV lottery winners?
- Part 6, Q11. My youngest child is a US citizen. As I understand, I should mark "No" here, right?
- Part 8, Q15. We planned to apply for visa renewal (our J1 visa expired last year). We paid the fees and scheduled the interviews but did not go because we got sick with covid. Once we recovered, we couldn't go due to a combination of long quarantine requirements in our home country, missing kids' school, our research work, etc. Does it count as a denial?
- Part 8. Does Q51.a apply to military personnel in general? I mean, the army (in general) damages individuals and property during war or special operations.
- Part 8 Q54. I served in mandatory military service in my country. My service was simple: no active combat or anything. Still, at the time of my service, some units of the army (e.g., special ops) were involved in very active things abroad (well, the military never acknowledged it, but independent news outlets did some reports). Should I answer yes or no?
- Part 8. Q65 We don't have any loans/mortgages/etc. We use credit cards that we pay in full every month. So, we put 0 in liabilities?

Questions about certified translations.
- Part 1, Q14 — my oldest has ITIN. For tax purposes, it is used as SSN. Should we specify it here, or since it is not precisely an SSN, we skip it?
- Part 2, Q3 to Q9 (Information About Your Immigrant Category) -- does the same answer apply here?
- Part 8, Q61: Does it apply to kids? Mark as "Yes"?
- Part 8, Q62: Size of the household — same as for the parents?
- Part 8, Q63-64 - same as for the parents?
- Part 8, Q66: The child is currently in 2nd grade. Should I mark "Grades 1 — 11" or skip the question?
- Part 8, Q67: none?
- Part 10: How do I fill it? In my child's name? In my name?
1. My diplomas have both english and my country's language. The left half of the page is in English, the right is in my country's language. We still have to translate it?
2. My child's birth certificate is also in both languages. Same question -- should it be translated?
Thank you for being so helpful!

p.s. I strive to help as much as I can’t, I however do not have the time to devote to helping people fill out their forms. That is why the pre-filled I-485 has been provided as a simple sample straight enough to follow IMO. You can imagine what it will take to respond if everyone comes with the same or similar set of questions. Answering most of the above questions is a one time exception in this case.
Qs 5, 6 (if applicable), 7, should be filled out for the derivatives.Hi Mom, for - 6. Q3 to Q9 (Information About Your Immigrant Category) -- does the same answer apply here?
6. Not applicable to DV based AOS application.
For this, do we not need to fill for derivatives applicant i.e. spouse and kid ? since I'm the principal applicant?
No, it will not.Hello I am on F1 visa and I am filing DV AOS this summer but I also have an internship, which I will use CPT for. Would applying for AOS cancel my CPT and make me ineligible to finish my internship?
Add them to each package.Hi Mom, I'm arranging financial documents. In the AOS spreadsheet, the educational/financial document is not mentioned for derivative applicant. But, to show that I'm not public charge I have to put in my spouse employment letter, salary slips, W2, tax form etc other than my own. Do I need to put these documents in supporting of my application ? or, Do the financial document of my spouse goes to his application? I'm asking this as my income is not sufficient alone.
Do I also need to put financial document for kid and spouse application?
Yes.In money order, the USCIS address should be of lockbox where we are sending application?
Yes.Hi
Instead of N/A is it okay to write NA?
Is it possible to write some part with ink and print the other part?
Hi. Have you received any notice yet? Me and my wife waiting for a notice already for a month.Hi mom. I am really worries. I sent my AOS application to Chicago lockbox on Feb 18 and it was delivered by Feb 20th. It's already March 7th and I haven't received any acceptance text message and my money order also hasn't been cashed. Whom should i contact?
hello, thank you for the response ... who should i email to be exact?I assume you have used more than one money order. Did they all get cashed? If so, email them and ask for receipts for the rest.
Add your information to the Timeline spreadsheet, doing so can shed more light into what may be going on with your case. We will be able to tell if others who filed around the same time as you already received their NOA or not.Hello. I have a question. Me and my wife applied for AOS based on DV Lottery. We sent all AOS Package almost one month ago but still did not receive any confirmation letter from USCIS. Maybe someone knows when should we receive this letter? What should we do in this situation?
Will be glad for any information.
Thank you!
Use the first day of the month in which your CN became current.I was hoping I could get some help with the i-134 that we are getting ready to take to the interview (waiting on appointment) If we have been in the country for many years on a different visa what do we put as the start date for intention to "Beneficiary's Anticipated Period of Stay in the United States" - Start Date:
Thank you so much.
