DV 2022 OC Selectees

Hey everyone, glad this thread is still going! I’ve just enter the US through JFK - planning on living in NYC. Everything went smooth and I’ve set up a USCIS account. I want to start working, get ID and bank account asap so wanting to get my SSN. Is there anyway to check if that is being processed already or if I need to go in and see them? Will that show up on my USCIS account or should I be on a different website for that?

P.S... I went to the Bank of America branch today and set up a bank account and secured credit card so we can build our credit file. Went and got a pre-paid SIM at AT&T first so we have a USA mobile number. Couldn't get post-paid account till SSN is received.
Hey, just wondering how you managed to get a credit card? What info did the ask?

USCIS and SSN are separate so it wont show up there. Not sure if there is anywhere you can check but you can go to a social security administration office and enquire.

Regarding credit card, not sure if its dif for each bank. But I got mine with Chase since I already had a Chase bank account, just had to ask for it and that was it. Was just an online form with 2-3 questions about salary etc.

You also dont have to wait to start working. From the SSA website.

Do I need to have my number before I start working? "We don’t require you to have an SSN before you start work. However, the Internal Revenue Service requires employers to use your SSN to report your wages. While you wait for your SSN, your employer can use a letter from us stating you applied for a number. Your immigration documents can prove your authorization to work in the United States."

Heard plenty of people have been easily able to open an account with Bank of America with minimal info. So no need to wait around for your SSN before you start doing everything you listed

Someone said that if you hold a GC and ever choose to abandon it in the future, you’d always be denied an ESTA later on. Is this true?
Ive never heard of this, and doesnt really make any sense why you would be banned from getting an ESTA later on just because you abandoned it. You didnt stay out of status or have it revoked for doing anything wrong

Oh nice thanks for the info. I’ve been researching “secured credit cards” also where you pay a deposit and they give you a credit card you can use to build up credit if you have none. I thought they’d ask for my ssn but if not I’ll try it tomorrow. Thanks!

With regards to getting a post paid T Mobile phone line. Is that a credit based thing as well? Has anyone used T-Mobile as their carrier?

Because you would now have immigration intent regardless of previously abandoning it.

I guess that makes sense but that still doesn't mean you will "always be denied an ESTA". There is plenty of people on this forum that have traveled to the US after submitting their DS260 on an ESTA while waiting for their interview. So If that was true they would have been denied. Just means you might be questioned more, not that you are guaranteed denial. You'll only be denied if they suspect you are going there to immigrate on an ESTA, so as long as you can explain why you abandoned it / that you still have ties to your home country then there wouldn't be a problem.

Hi All,

Did anyone not receive their SSN card within three weeks of arriving? I'm wondering if I should try calling SSA by phone or by going to an office. Would appreciate any insight from those who have been in the same situation
Hey did you end up receiving your SSN? How long did it take in the end?

I’ve been in the US for 5 weeks now and no updates on the USCIS about when my SSN card is ready. My account just shows that the fee has been paid.
I’m still waiting for my SSN too. I’ve been looking into applying at the social security office but they need 2 forms of ID (I only have one). Not sure if there’s a way to check if I’m in the system yet or not.

You will not see any update about your SSN on your USCIS account as the USCIS does not produce nor track the SSN, a different organization is responsible for producing and mailing it. The fee paid information you’re seeing is for your GC, there’s no fee for the SSN. If you’ve waited 5 weeks and the SSN card not yet shown up, it indicates you’re one of the few who fell through the cracks, you’ll need to apply in person at your nearest SSA office in that case.

This is news to me. Where did you come across this information about needing two forms of ID before you can apply for the SSN?

So to confirm, the USCIS account shows that the fee for the green card has been paid. Does the GC list the social security number on it? I thought that when the card was dispatched, the account would be updated to state this. If this isn’t the case, how do I get notified that the card has been sent?

Now you’re saying that I need to go to an office to apply for a SSN?

Your SSN does not get listed on your GC, different organizations are responsible for those two documents. You don’t get notified when the SSN card gets sent. You’ll either see it in the mail, or it doesn’t show up. Which is why I indicated you’ll need to visit the nearest SSA office if you’ve waited 5 weeks since being admitted as a LPR and the SSN card has not shown up.

I didn’t realise that two seperate documents are sent once i entered and became a LPR: the GC and SSN.

The USCIS account states that the permanent resident card can take up to 90 days to arrive. I assumed that this time frame might apply for the SSN, but obviously not from what you write.

Am I mistaken or have i previously read on this forum that there is a way to track any of the above two documents?
