As for the newspaper article, we know that many newspapers & media outlets like to create fear and apprehension, including the Indian Newspaper that you posted. Just because something is in a newpaper doesn't mean it is correct.
The RealID Act is with reference to illegal aliens. The debate is about whether a drivers licenses should be given to them.
Again, if you have arrived legally then you should not be worried. Please don't add to people's worries with things that are unrelated.
Good luck to all of you.
I totally agree with you, this newspaper says
"According to Dawn, this "Real ID act, if enacted, would give the Secretary of Homeland Security unlimited powers. Immigrants will no longer be able to obtain driver's licenses or car insurance. Police can randomly stop an immigrant and ask him to prove his status and can arbitrarily detain him.""
How can anyone legally entering in US cannot be eligible for license, I did some (very little) reading on this act and it says this
"would set standards for all driver's licenses in the country and would require the states to verify that applicants for licenses are U.S. citizens or live in the country legally. If states didn't comply after three years, their licenses couldn't be used for federal purposes, including boarding airplanes."
nowhere it says that immigrants are not allowed to apply for license.
As far as randomly stopping thing is concerned they can even do that today. I was randomly picked by some "officer" last year near lake placid, NY and was asked to prove legal status of me and my wife, we showed them some docs and said we are legally here and that was it.
