Thanks,

They have something called electronic visa or whatever which you can get if you have a U.S. issued travel document.

I checked that, it's only for US citizens and citizens of a number of other countries. My countrie is not on that list! I need to apply for a visa in the US!

I went there four years ago (when I was still a permanent resident) and they were able to issue the ETA because I had a refugee travel document issued by the DHS. It took like two minutes using a computer.

That is why the first thing I asked you was your citizenship. Anyway, Australia should not have an issue granting a visa to a US permanent resident. Good luck and have a fun trip. I went to Australia on my honeymoon. It was wonderful.

Woosterlad has been traveling to Australia on an RTD/RP with/without GC, and he's never had a problem getting a visa. It's all done by post, and takes between about a week.

So does re-entry permit serve as U.S. passport for entering another countries? Is there a list which countries accept it ?

4 years ago I needed to get quickly to Australia for business reasons. eVisitor was not yet available then so I flew to Washington DC and was issued a visa on the spot. I carried only my green card and company letter stating I need to be there immediately.

Last year I went to Australia for pleasure and used eVisitor (painless and free).

For asylees who are unable to get a national passport.
Re-entry permit may look similar to refugee travel document, but they are two separate entities that serve different purposes. RP is used for entering the USA after an absence of up to 2 years while the RTD is used in the same way as a passport. Of course, the holder of the RTD would need to get visa for 99% of countries in the world.

I heard one or two stories where somebody claimed that he was able to enter certain countries on RP, but I do not know if that was true.

The RP is in exactly the same format as an RTD: they are both travel documents and look like a passport. You can travel on both, though a handful of countries don't accept them. RTDs are always valid for only 1 year, while the RP is mostly valid for 2, unless you've already been outside the country for a long time. I've been traveling on them for the past 5 years. As far as I know, you need a regular visa to go to Australia on an RP or RTD.
