Both are right. The immigration officer is formally reviewing your application while waiting for the name check to be done. It is a polite way of saying @#$% off and wait!

I did travel a lot while waiting for the name check. No problems at all, BUT maybe this is the reason why my name check is still pending. All trips were 2-3 week long.

Well, you are right, but the chance of getting answer is about 25% (from my experience): 1 out of 4 letters was answered and in total it took more time to wait for this answer rather then waiting for the e-mail reply. But, if e-mail does not work ... maybe this is the only chance.

There is no other way, I am sorry. You have to keep trying, or better forget about FBI, save your time and nerves. They will reply that your name check is pending until they finish checking or whatever they do over there. You have no way of speeding things up. Unless you are going to fight in...
