It is Gatwick and Heathrow. Immigration at Gatwick will issue you a 24 hours transit visa if you show them your onward ticket to Germany. i did it many times.
FYI.. the UK fingerprints and photographs all visitors using travel documents other than passports at entry points. Allow extra time for this on entry to the United Kingdom.
I am not a lawyer and as such cannot give you advice. But I am a firm believer that once a green card holder, you need not to worry about going back home for visits like any other green card holder. But that’s just me… I would imagine in your case though that you wouldn’t want to go back...
