The consulate will know if your high school is equivalent to 12 years, but if you have a degree in engineering it almost certainly is. Take along proof of all your educational (high school and further) qualifications.

Hey Samer,

Just a few matters to address (according to me however I am open to being corrected by other forum members):

- High School Diploma/Secondary School Certificate - this would suffice yes but if you have a school leaving certificate documenting your entire educational history there's nothing wrong with taking it to the interview. If you have more documents/evidence, you are playing safe in a manner of speaking. I personally am taking both my high school diploma and school leaving certificate.

- University Degree - take this along with you to the interview along with the high school diploma/secondary school certificate.

- I noticed on your signature that you've started applying for police certificates however I recommend you be careful on this (as you're DV2014) and cross-check the validity. Some certificates are valid for 3 months and some for 6 months. There is no point in obtaining police certificates if your interview is scheduled for all the way in 2014. My point being is you don't want to be happy having the certificates only to come to the interview and be told that they are invalid because they were obtained outside the validity period.

- Get all your other basic civil documents together but things like police certificates and medical report (medicals from what I have read are generally valid for 6 months) should only be undertaken as per the validity periods specified either on the certificates or by the US Embassy where you reside.

Momo, i think the points you have raised are very valuable, (I think and please correct me if wrong) for police certificates i have applied the one's that are for my previous residence (1 Y country + 1 X Country), i will not stay there anymore, the current residence (Lets say Z), I plan to get before 1 month or when i Get the 2NL, i assume that the Consular officer will know that from my passport stamps (please correct me if wrong), or can be clarified during the Interview,?

I have a question in the three countries the Police certificates are called" Good Conduct Certificate", is it the same in your country? I will try to confirm with the US embassy here as well, but please if you guys can share, it will be helpful?

Hey samershahin,

It doesn't matter which country the police certificates are from. Be safe and stay within the validity period (to my knowledge the norm is that police certificates are valid for 3 months or 6 months depending on which country they are from).

Remember the 2nd NL normally comes out 6-7 weeks before your interview so this is the ideal time to get your police certificates and medical sorted out.

Country X - obtain this physically two months before your interview
Country Y - obtain this physically two months before your interview
Country Z - obtain this physically two months before your interview

If you look at my signature I have a similar case to yours whereby I had to obtain a police certificate from the UK and one from Tanzania. My UK certificate was called a Police Certificate and Tanzania certificate was called Police Clearance Certificate. Different countries have different names for these I suppose.

Its not a hard and fast rule that they have to be called Certificate of Good Conduct or Police Clearance Certificate so don't worry. As long as you follow the DV instructions for selectees on where to obtain the relevance police certificate in your country you're fine.

Where are you applying from?

You can usually only book your medical when you've received your 2nd NL anyway.

Agree re police certificates, if they expire you will have to have them reissued. Depending on country it may take a while to get them though so it's worth checking out how long they usually take so you have a better idea when to apply for them. (Some countries will take longer than 2 months to issue.) If like us you end up only getting them after the interview date it's not a big problem - just go to the interview anyway and then send them through when they arrive, the embassy will then issue your visa once they have all the paperwork. And it doesn't matter what they're called, as Momo says the consular officials will know what the right documents for your country are.

Thanks Both Momo and Sussie

Our pleasure to be of assistance Samer :)

I was so fearful about timing (and things in Tanzania sometimes take ages) that as soon as I found out the August cut-offs (before I even got the 2nd NL), I went and got my police certificate for Tanzania in two days and the same week I started doing my work on the UK police certificate which I got within 10 days.

I just want to recommend taking international birth certificate(s) not to the interview, but to the US. Such certificates may serve for various purposes, such as part of employment or school application processes, or for rental/inheritance reasons.

On another note, my brother just completed his I-485 process and his Green Card has been approved which he'll receive in the next 30 days. One down, one to go so I hope I get through the interview.

Dears, i want to ask when you say interview second week of august, the status check website doesn't specify the exact date of interview??

Hey Samer,

You're DV2014 so you won't have any information on your interview until your case number becomes current and you receive your 2nd NL.

Firstly, relax. You are worrying about tiny details - and you have a long time to understand and wait yet!!!

OK - so the 2NL (as I understand it) is this:-

The visa bulletin is published around the 10th to the 15th of the month - and when your number is within the range for your region (or the whole region is marked as "CURRENT") then your case is current and you can expect your ""NL".

The 2NL is a a generic email (i.e. contains no information specific to your appointment). The 2NL prompts you to go and check the status check (where you originally saw your you have been selected letter). - https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/

The selected letter will have been replaced by a letter with the appointment details (office, date and time). You do not have to contact the embassy, you just turn up at the allotted date and time.

I hope that answers all your questions about the 2NL.

Incidentally I see you have already started the police certs process. It is probably too early to have done that because the certs have a "life" i.e. they are no longer considered current once they are too old. I think they are supposed to be less than 6 months old, so given your case number you should avoid applying too early.
