What if i had to visit home country?

Guys,i have this question bothering me and me be you guys could give a better advice:
My I-485 is under processing like many of u guys, since 2001. I have a US travel document. But obviously ,i am still considered citizen of my Home country. Now my origional passport(home country) expired 2 years ago and like a wise asylee i didn't renew it.
Now tell me what happens if for some reason i had to visit my home country. I know INS can allow you to visit home country for legitimate reasons such as death of a family member etc. My wisdom says i have 2 choices:
1) Go to embassy of my home country and get visa stamped on RTD. But is it possible?
2) Go to home country on expired passport . But then when i come back my home country immigration can create problems on an expired passport.

Please advice me what to do?

Travel back home could be risky

1) Call your Home country embassy and ask if they will stamp you a visa in RTD. Some countries over there (Russia, Nepal for example) won’t put any visas in RTD.
2) Yes, you can go home on your expired passport. Or – they might issue you a “certificate to return” and ask you to exchange it for a real passport when you in your county. Again – you should call your embassy and ask about their procedures. Technically you still a citizen of your Home Country and they won’t deny you to come back.
But, you still need your valid RTD to enter back in the US.

There also some other options – travel to the neighboring country for example and meet your family there. Nobody here can give you a definite advice on this matter.
You do understand that while your asylee adjustment petition is pending, you must not return to the country of alleged prosecution?
So if you decide to go back home, remember there might be consequences.

Thanks Peach for you valuable advice.
Does anyone else in the forum also had a similar situation when they had to make urgent visit to home country and would like to share????

Ok you must be new here. Who told you that the
"INS can allow you to visit home country for legitimate reasons such as death of a family member etc?" You are misguided my friend; do not go home because this will mean that your fear is not founded anymore. This action may cause the INS to revoke your asylee status. Please check previous posts that covered this issue in detail and read posts by miami2002 who talked about his friend who got hard time by the INS for travelling home. ... I also failed to understand your logic when you said you would like to go home with your RTD. Are you kidding me? Are not you afraid that your home country will punish you for claiming that they oppressed you? What do you expect them to do when they find out that you applied for asylum in another country?

Hello everybody!

I am so glad i found this forum. It is so helpful. I was tired of searching the web for info since i have got asylum not long time ago. I hope i will make some friends on this forum. :)

I fully agree with Shamshon`s posting. There is no way asylees can be allowed to visit home country. Though it is very hard not to see one's parents, all other family members and dear old buddies from school. :(

As far as i understood (please correct me if i am wrong) the only legal way would be to go to a third country and meet with family members there, am i right?

So i searched through this forum but could not find one thing. Is there anyone who knows the list of countries where you can travel with RTD and no visas required?

It has been more than a year since i left my family. I applied I-730.I assume it is gonna take at least another year before they can come overhere and only then i can again start normal family life. ;)

so i am thinking about meeting with them in another country. Looks like it is gonna be Turkey. Anyone here knows if the accept RTD?

God bless everyone on this forum! :)

Germany and Singapore offer visa-free entrance to holders of American RTDs.

For most other places, getting a visa is relatively easy (you have an American issued document, that means a lot, notwithstanding the views of some folks).

Good luck.
