Social security number

Hi people.
A question about the social security number. I won my GC and am moving to the USA next month. A long time ago, in 92, I was doing an internship in the US and obtained a US social security number then. I still have the card, it says "not valid for employment" (which is logical).
Now that I have the GC, will I keep the same social security number (and just ask for a new ss card that says valid for employment), or do I need to ask for a new social security number ?
Please, can you clear this up ? Thanks.
Fabb

Hello fabb,

I was in the same case as you are. I studied in America and did an internship years ago and my SSN said Valid for work only with DHS authorization. I did not realize at the time so when I filled out form DS 230 (I think) I put that I already had a SSN and did not want a new one.
During my interview at the embassy, they told me that they will issue me a new SSN because the one I have it not valid for regular work. So they made me change the answer on the form and they said that I'll get a new one when I arrive. It takes up to 3 weeks for the new card to arrive.
If you did not do it. You need to issue a new one.
Call them to know where to go 1 800 772 1213 www.socialsecurity.gov

Jeffy14 and namecheckvictim, I'm confused.
You guys are saying just the opposite : one is saying I will keep the same number, the other that I need a new one.
Anyone else have the answer please ?

You will keep the same number. My friend had a similar thing but they won't sent it to you in FLorida. We called the office and were told to sent all papers in and we got it all back since they don't take copies.

They need originals and they told us that (we already knew) it isn't smart to sent in your original card. When you go into the office it takes only a few minutes and they will sent you a new card a few days later without the work restriction.

fabb,

bentlebee is right. i went to my local ss office and re-applied to remove the restriction and they sent me a new ss card with the same number without the restriction printed on it. bring originals when you go see them.

hi,
i am in the same situation, when i filled the form DS230 I asked for a new SSN.
2 years ago i worked in the US with a SSN(valid only with the DHS authorization)+a work permit. Last year I came to my country Canada for good. lukily I won the DV lottery.
I dont know if they ll deliver me a new SSN completely different from the former one when I will return back to the US with my DV visa ?

Hey guys, I read all the posts and your comments. I dont think you get a new SSN, because once you were assigned a number, that number does not change, you can get a new social security card that is "clean" does not say that it is valid for work with valid DHS, but the number stays the same. My friend after he was granted asylum, he went to the social security office and in a week got a clean social security card, but with the same number.

you may be right , i wish they could give me a different SSN..............

Why would you want a different social security number? unless you have some bad record on that number, that is why, they do not change the number, but only change the card.

Hi natta,
well my record is clean, i just want to start a new life with a new SSN , I though the SS office might deliver a new SSN under request !

Why...did you do something in the past that you would like to be taken off your SSN...Most items stay for at least 7 yrs on your credit report...

You get to keep the same # with the same things on your report....be glad you get a GC...!

What do you mean a new life with a new SSN? life goes on, it doesn't start over, same for you credit history and SSN

My credit report is clean, i want the DHS restriction to be removed. When i filled the DS230 form,i made the request to have a new SSN thus i think they can give me a new one, i hope so..............

You will get a new card don't worry...new nice and fresh, BUT WITH THE SAME #!!!!

In most countries you get a a tax ID # or something called like a SSN or some kind of # at birth which you keep until you die...the same over here...

The only people who get different # are the ones who commit ID theft and basically they still have their own number but they use someone elses #!

So it is either that you are naive or it is a red flag....

Finally someone that makes sense and knows what they're saying. Thanks for explaining again. :)

No, don't worry....SSN has nothing to do with your case and in our area you won't get it mailed if you are applying for the first time, even though it might come across that they will do. You have to go in person with your proof and you will get a SSN # immediately and the card a few days later.

For each of your procedures, you will need your Green Card and your Social Security Number. This number is really important in the USA. You will need it for most of administrative procedures, like open a bank account, get a driver license (in most states), apply for public assistance etc. Actually, it is not only a number that allows you to get medical advantages, like in most health care systems of European countries.
