Social security number

For each of your procedures, you will need your Green Card and your Social Security Number. This number is really important in the USA. You will need it for most of administrative procedures, like open a bank account, get a driver license (in most states), apply for public assistance etc. Actually, it is not only a number that allows you to get medical advantages, like in most health care systems of European countries.

Sorry I disagree with you....

You DON'T need a SSN to open a bank account, get a drivers license, get in school, get free treatment for children under 18 at the health department, or even get health insurance.

A GC is NOT a path to free medicare! For that you have to have a work history and to have paid into the system.

I DO agree that a SSN makes you life easier in the USA, but I was here legally for years without a GC with a visa and had a very high credit score, credit card, drivers license, health insurance, etc...

Don't sell BS to people.

I totally agree with you bentlebee, as I am in the same situation, have been in this country for more than 4 years legally on F1 visa and have opened several bank accounts, credit cards, got health insurance and driver license. Some people just dont know what they are talking about.Hope that for some with the GC will come the knowledge as well and that they will not confuse people and disapoint in some cases.

Congrats on winning and some people seem to think that a GC gives them the right on a bailout...well welcome to reality and welcome to a system that is great for people who want to achive something in life....for losers...they better stay in a socialist system....but I'm rather here:)

Thanks, hope all goes well.

No problem...the thing that is true that life can be easier with a SSN and somethings can't be accessable without a SSN but you can live easily without a SSN and go to school, have a bank account, get a credit card, etc...

But for instance you can't become a realtor without having a SSN....and of course without a SSN you are not allowed to work....

Well, you DO need a SSN to open any online bank account, and you DO need it to open a line of credit. Without SSN you can only get a checking and/or savings account when you come in person.

GC is not a path, but it allows you to receive Medicaid, Medicare, and a few other benefits. You do not need any work history at all - it is all income based.

i was issued a ssn in 1986 when i was just 6. it had my first middle initial and last name on it....after going abroad and not returning for 365 days, my gc got expired in 1992. my father petitioned for my visa and in 2002 iu got a new gc. i kept my old ssn though, now the issue is on my new gc my name appears differently, a different cobination of the first middle nd last names. should i have had requested a new card earlier?
