S. 1932 Status

I just spoke to the gentleman at James Sensenbrenner, Jr. at 202-225-5101. We had around 10 minutes of phone conversation and during that he have to stop me for one time in order to get another phone call.

He told me that the bill is still not finish and is expected in next 3-4 hours. He said that once the bill is submitted then it will be brought on the floor in the House. He heard me about the immigration problem that all legal immigrants are facing. I also told him that there are unofficial news that the section 8001 of S1932 is removed in the final immigration bill. I told him that if it is possible please send the message to Congressman that this section is very important and will help all legal immigrants in this country. He said I will certaily do that.

He also said that so far there is no information that the section 8001 is removed.

that was me had to interrupt for.. I called and told him about this and he asked me where i was calling from.. I did'nt hide my caller id and told him i was calling from TX. he said he had another person waiting on the call and asked me to call the TX representative...:)

in addition to what canadian_dream has said, convincing the lawmakers of the urgency of this would be difficult.
otherwise, there are lot of proposals like hagel's proposal of giving GC to people with degrees from US and\or have worked here for 3 years.
combining the current provisions with the budget bill has been a great way to get the relief proposals this far this fast.

Don't get me wrong but I think that would be an uphill task. Starting a new bill and muster a bi-partisan support for it is generally a very difficult. You have to convince both the chambers just to bring it on the floor for debate. Not to mention White House support and other instense lobbying needed to get it passed. Overall a very complicated initiative. Unless there are ample returns for the citizens most lawmakers stay away from it as it will not help their voters. They are working hard for illegal immigration because it puts lot of pressure on the public resources. Also 11 Million illegal immigrants are much more of a concern than less the half a million legals.
Now I really think S.1932/HR.4241 was a very good vehicle for getting things done we tried and fought hard for it. I will not loose heart if it doesn't go through it, but being a realist I will not be very hopeful either for anything for legal immigrants in near future. This is because next year is election year and focus will be more on Anti-Immigration or curbing illegal immigration.

Our hope is (was) S.1932 8001. We have put up a good fight and I hope we prevail. Even if we didn't I would accept defeat gracefully. Lastly this forum has been source of lot of energy for a lot of like minded individuals who work hard to get things done.

===========
It appear from your narrative that Congressman John Conyers, Jr. thinks that he generally agree with section 8000/8001 but do not agree with the bill in general. How about we put in cordinated effort with a group of Senators and Congressmen to initiate a seperate bill for just the provisions in section 8000/8001. This would remove any complexity of clubbing this initiative with any other provision. Just a sugestion as I am thinking out loud ....

Just a Thought

Given the omnibus nature of the bill, I have a feeling it is going to pass. No one is specifically going to exclude section 8001 from the bill.. But if I understand right, it has to be specifically included, correct ?

We still have fw more hours left. The people working on this bill can change anything at any time as long as the bill is not on the floor for voting.

Please spend some more time to call the senators and house of representative's office. Their staff is in the office so keep pressure on. The people working in the staff have the ability to send the messages to the people working in the conference committee.

So please keep calling.

We need more of this kind of message. There is nothing wrong to discuss other things over here but at the same time please keep calling the congressman offices. The phone calling activity is very important and should not be stop at this time. The staff of all congressman(s) AND Congresswomen(s) is in the office. Please tell them to send the message requesting to include the section 8001 of S1932.

The negotiation is still going on.

I called Jim Nussle, IA, Chairman at 202-225-2911. The individual said that the final report is still not filled yet and is expected today anytime in the evening. I also asked if there is any whether the section 8001 of S1932 is included or not. The discussion is still going on and there is no information on that.

I also told him that I am very impressed by his hard work to address the deficit and the convincing arguments presented by him on the floor. He said that I was very surprised that you have lot of information on this bill. I told him that I am following the development on the C-SPAN. I am a legal immigrant affected by the retrogression and want Jim's help on this issue. I want his support and include section 8001 of S 1932 to be included in the final conference committee report.

Guys, This is my 5th call where I am told that the conference committee report is still not final. Keep calling. Don't loose hope. We are still in the game. Don't let go the pressure and momentum that is built by lot of the people over here.

GUYS, YOU DID A WONDERFUL JOB,
yes, we really should call these senators and congressman and asking for their support and opinion s to help us relief.
we should contact all resources . if we can get a seperate bill and let this passed in congress, then we will win.( looks like senators already passed it , right?)
let's keep calling....

Khodalmd,

I had made the call around 11:00am. The information below is all that I got!
I called the same number that Waldenpond called last night.

BUT, ever since so many people are getting this "not everything is finanlized yet" message that I am beginning to think that the battle just may not be over yet!
