Question on STATE residency requirements for citizenship application

Hi there,

I will be eligible to apply for US citizenship on October 2, 2009. When I got my greencard, I applied through my parents and my address on file with USCIS has always been the address of my parents home. Since I got the GC, I have lived at several different addresses but never updated it with the USCIS.

Since the beginning of this year, the address associated with all my bank accounts and credit cards has been that of my parents. I do not plan on living at that address (or in the same state) for the 3 months before submitting my N-400 application. Will bank statements reflecting my parents address be sufficient to prove residency in that state, as required for the N-400 application?

Any information or advice would be really appreciated!!! Thanks!

Yes, I am in NY and they are in VA and we will all send our applications in to the Lewisville, TX lockbox facility.

Also, in the N-400 application, they ask for a list of all the places I have lived during the last 5 years. Should I list all the addresses, or should I just put my parents address down?

Thanks.

NY and VA are in different district areas and serviced by different district offices. If NY is your permanent address, you'll need to establish 3 months of residency in NY first before you file. Also, notify USCIS immediately of your permanent address.
You'll need to list all your previous addresses in last 5 years.

Are you in school on NY and your parents supporting you ?

No, I am working here. The reason I have never established NY as my permanent address is because I have moved around a lot, whereas my parents have been at the same address for the past 8 years. I can't change my address now as I will be moving in the next 3 months (within NY) and don't want to lose any important mail coming from USCIS. Can I just put my parents address down as my current home address?

Also, in the application form I am required to put down all the other addresses I have lived at in the last 5 years, as well as all places of employment--will I be penalized or will my application be rejected if I put down addresses that I never reported to USCIS?

You must put disclose your permanent address..if your parent's address is not your permanent address, then you can't use it. You can use you parent's address as mailing address, but not as permanent address.

If you're thinking of using your parent's address as your permanent address, and are thinking of not disclosing past addresses they are both bad ideas as you are required to notify USCIS of any address change (no matter how often you permanently move), and you're required to answer the application truthfully.

Joanne, I say you apply thru NY, leave your parents as "mailing address" and go ahead and change to you current address with USCIS today and then again when you move in the next 3 months, I think they will use the address you give them on the application not the one on their system, I think they use that to keep an eye on us hahaha.

I will be eligible to apply for US citizenship on October 2, 2009.
Does that mean your green card was approved on Dec. 31, 2004?

If your green card was approved on January 2, 2005, you will not be eligible to apply on October 2, 2009, because 90 days before January 2 is October 4.
