Preserving your Green Card

I plan to travel to my native country for 4 years. I am not interested in becoming a U.S. citizen; however, I would like to know how to preserve my permanent resident status and be able to enter the U.S.? A re-entry is only good for 2 years and it is not enough.

A Green Card is given to you so that you can reside in the US, not to preserve your ability to return several years down the line after residing somewhere else.

Lol. Yeah. I guess mmed said it best. On the other hand, I wonder if you can re-gain permanent resident status (via consular processing) based on your still valid and approved I-140 (if it was labor based).

I read elsewhere someone traveled outside the State for 4 years and able to return without filing anything. How does he/she do that? Surely, a permanent resident can travel beyond 2 years for some purpose.

Why do some people try so hard to get a GC and then want to leave the minute they get it????

One or two or even three persons stayed for 4 years and returned back does not mean that it is OK for any GC holder to stay for 4 years and come back like them. We do not know their specific circumstances and they may returned every now and then to keep their GCs valid. If it is like that, a good proportion of GC holders will go. The GC is something which help us to find better opportunity in the US, if we can find much more better one overseas, I think the GC has no meaning and fighting to change the rules to keep the GC and taking the better chance overseas for many years at the same time may be impossible.

A lot of people really don't have to try so hard to get green card. I mean people who won in lottery.

Thats also my case. Commercials on many many internet websites tell us how great is gc, that you'll then always have the doors to america open ...

Unfortunately, those commercials are wrong. The Green card doesn't keep a door open; it gives you a door you can walk through (and stay mostly on the other side).

Exactly, and that's why so many people are shocked when they find out opposite.

If I knew what I know now I would think twice ...
