Valid for 6 months past the expiration date? Cool.
Green card holders are not subject to the "passport must be valid for 6 months" rule. And most countries have joined an agreement that recognizes passports as being valid for 6 months beyond the printed expiration date.
The countries who joined the agreement recognize the passport as being valid for returning to the country of issue for 6 months after expiration, but not necessarily for traveling to other countries beyond the expiration date. So you can use a recently expired passport of country A to travel to country A, but you can't use the same expired passport to travel to country B.Just to be clear, this recognition of passports beyond expiry is strictly for the purposes of visa issuance, not for use of the passport as a travel document, which remains only 'til expiry date.
It's a Russian passport, so it's not particularly risky if the travel is to Russia. Just renew the passport in Russia itself if unable to return within that two-week window."passport expires 2 weeks after the return date" sounds to me a little risky regardless the re-entry being possible. You don't know what is going to happen during the trip. I would have at least a couple of extra months on the expiration date for sure...
It might be a good idea to have a long vacation in Russia. Sometimes, getting a new passport takes up to 6 weeks.Just renew the passport in Russia itself if unable to return within that two-week window.
