Naturalization question: Can one leave the USA after oath without US passport?

my understanding is that one looses the Greencard after the N-400 interview and the oath.

We have a challenge that we need to leave the same day of the oath to Europe and will not have the time to apply for a US passport.

Can one apply at a Consulate/Embassy of the USA outside the USA for a passport?

much appreciated

US citizens must have a US passport when leaving the country to Europe. If you try leaving on your foreign passport, the airline might request evidence of your immigration status in US. If you then tell them you are a USC, they might request a US passport.
On the other hand, if the airline lets you leave on your foreign passport you could then apply for passport at a US consulate in Europe.

Provided you've applied to retain your German citizenship. You can also apply for a same-day passport if you live near a passport office.

It likely would be impossible to take the oath, apply for a passport after the oath, and receive the passport with enough time to make the flight on the same day.

They might accept the naturalization certificate (although technically a US passport is required for a US citizen leaving the US by air).

For outbound flights, from USA, no airlines asks your immigration status. They just check your passport and never your green card. So the OP may be able to leave USA with his German passport fairly easily.

One option is that he could apply for PP here and after it arrives at his residence here, have it mailed to Germany. If he has a email copy and in case of loss in transit he could easily get a new one issued by US Consul.

i would not know legal implication of this advice. Seniors please comment.

Hi Buddy
Do not try to make it so complicated. Just go, show your air ticket and apply for same day pp. That's it.

Wrong. Twice for outgoing flights I was asked my status in the US, and when I said permanent resident they asked for my green card and then swiped the green card.

That's true, but they're not going to refuse to let him leave the US if he doesn't give the document they're expecting.
