H1 Visa stamping experience- Canada

DS 156 form, question number #30

30. Have You Ever Been Issued a U.S. Visa?
WHEN?____________
WHERE?___________
WHAT KIND OF VISA?______________

Is this mean, do I need fill current H1B visa approval details?

Do we need to fill DS 156, DS157 one for each person separately? I am the primary (H1B) and I have two dependants (H4)

Can someone clarify this question please?

Thanks!!!

Calgary, Canada H1B stamping

Guys, here is my experience.

appointment at 8:30am so i reached there by 7:45am. Small line of may b 4 or 5 infront of me. The consulate opens at 8:30. So i guess, i did have the 1st slot. slowly but surely the queue is growing bigger at the time nears.
A security guy takes a bactck of 6 people and escort us to the consulate on the 10th floor. Then one guy checks everything what we have and sends us inside the consulate with a token number.

One by one each token number is called, and my number comes and the lady collects all doc's from me including i20's and i pay her the $100 and she says to wait till my name is called for the interview.

Verification officer calls my name and i go. I wish him and he sees that i graduated this year and i have been here since 2003. Looks at my documents, and passport,,,,sees the i94 and takes it out.then tells me that "let me takes this (i94) out so that you 'll have 1 less thing to carry. I figured out that he would most likely give me the H1 but held on my nerves.Meanwhile he cancels my f1 visa with a stamp saying "cancelled without prejudice". Then he ask me the question, what are you working, i say XXXXXXX. and then he ask me to describe that a little which i did and he said to come the same day at 3:00pm to collect the visa and finally he said, "have a safe return flight". Overall, it was a good experience for me,

I had pretty much every document with me JUST IN CASE.

so wat i can say is as long as the documents are clear and legit and so give a good impression on the VO's, no one should have problem.

By the way i stayed at days inn hotel for $80/night which was reasonalby cheaper compare to the others nearby. and you got train two blocks away from the hotel. It was very convenient and not bad at all. the room was very good.

But if u r willing to pay more, there r some good ones near to consulate.

and finally, i wud like to thank this forum. it did give me lot of insight into how to deal with different situtations

dc_newbie- Thanks for your input, I booked myself for two nights at the Marriott. From the map it looks like it is tops 6-8 blocks from the consulate, hopefully that works out ok !

Jabroni - Thanks for sharing your experience! I am headed to Calgary later this week for my stamping. Couple of questions for you, would appreciate your response:

i) The $100 Visa fee can be paid by cash correct?
ii) I have heard conflicting information regarding what's allowed inside the consulate, from your experience what do you think?
iii) Did you just submit your I-20s along with your other documents or were you specifically asked for it?
iv) How long did the whole process take?
v) Lastly, any suggestions as to anything fun to do in Calgary? or was it just too cold??

Thanks and have a nice weekend!
Neo

Yes, it is $100 cash

They asked me i20 along with the other doc, while paying to $100.

The whole process took about 35-40min from the time you enter inside the consulate. But then again, it was quick for me because i was one of the first slot guys. And the day progresses it takes really long time.

I wud say, u can take jacket, and your documents folder. no electronics.

places to go, i have no idea. sorry. wrong person to ask

How to get visa dates in Toronto

Just curious to know if anyone was able to get an appointment recently(past week) in Toronto thru nvars.com

I have been trying to get one for the past one week but not yet successful.

When do they open the dates ? I see all other consulates open the dates.
Alternatively, can we call them ?

Thanks in advance.

H1 6th year extension successfully done @ Toronto -

Hello everyone,
First a Big Thanks to the Forum people, I got my 6th year extension done successfully at Toronto. It was a cake walk. Only 2 questions asked, 1.How long working for present company, 2. Have done any US degree. They gave me the passport stamped on that day itself. But I never heard any one saying like that.
I drove from Buffalo, at the port of entry and exit, they asked any thing to declare, Answered - No further questions. So it was very simple.

Just stick to the list people that has posted in previous postings. I think now they even waived the 50$ fee, which we had to pay at the consulate.
There were 2 Interviewers, one male and another female. The female person was asking more questions than the male. But both were easy going.
Good Luck Folks.

Again Thanks a lot for everyone -

Also my passport expires in June 19, is true that I need to get the stamp 6 months before the passport expires?
Thank you. :)

Non US degree..

Hi,

I am planning to go to Toronto, canada to get my H1 extension stamped. I have a Non US Bachelors degree and dont have any degrees in US. This is the seventh year extension. Will there be any issues in getting the visa?

I have moved recently and my paper work is in place for all the moves. Can you tell me, will there be any problem if there are two different addresses in the pay stubs.

Thanks in advance.

come on... this is your seventh year anappa... haven't you got a stamp earlier? If so, then I don't see why should it be of any concern to you that your degree might be an issue?

I would say the same with the address change. These people in the embassies can understand the fact that people do move their places and change addresses. They hardly ever ask for a pay stub.... and in no way, will be matching addresses on your pay stubs. You got too much stuff worrying you for little reason :)

Relax and take it easy... Just hope you don't get flagged for Additional Background checks.

H1B visa experience in Vancouver - 27th Nov, Bangladeshi H1B holder

I just got my visa from Vancouver. Being a Bangladeshi with typical Muslim name I was very worried. The whole interview took less than 5 minutes. The counselor wanted to see my MS degree certificate and transcript, I-797 notice and that is all.

I would like to ask a question for anyone who has insight into this issue:

They gave me one year visa although my H1B will expire in 2009. And this is my first H1B stamping. As a result I was confused. So, after receiving the passport I went back to the security folks and they took me to another counselor. I asked the question about why I was given only one year instead of 3 years of visa. The counselor told me that anybody who holds certain country passport (including Bangladesh) will get only 1 year visa. Is it a new rule or was I given a wrong information? Any suggestion of what might be my course of action to take this issue to proper authority (assuming there is no such rule).

As always thanks for all the suggestions and information that I have received from this website. I truly appreciate all of the forum members' sincere clarification of any issue.

B2 to H1 stamping without US degree ?

Hi All,

I'm planning to get H1 stamping first time at Vancouver, Canada. I don't have any US degree and I have changed my status from B2 to H1 in the USA.

All other documents and circumstances are fine.

Do you see any chance for me to get H1 visa stamp denied?
Is there anybody who experienced the same background as mine?

Please help me from my deep concern...

Hi everyone.
Does enybody know anything about relationship between new visa and the date of expiration of passport? The oppointment confirmation package says that to be eligable for a visa your passport must be valid for at least 6 months past your intented stay in the United States. My oppoinment is on January 11, and my passport expires in June 19th 2007. This is my first H1B ,approved in 2005-08 in the US.
Please respond, it's very important.
Thanks in advance !

Hi people,
I know the chennai consulate asks for a bunch of copies included copies of all pages of passport and weird things. Any of you know if I need to take copies of anything or just originals is fine? Please let me know, i'm appearing this Monday at Vancouver!!

I appeared this Monday at Vancouver. The lady asked me to show my MS transcript, certificate. Then she asked me if I had a previous H1 approval. So I showed her my old I-797. Nothing else.

hi
is it not possible to renew your PP before you go for your interview? just seems to be better idea since your PP will expire almost a year before your visa.
but sorry I don't have eny experience in this to actually say what they will do.

dhm2002

Thanks for the advise dhm2002, but unfirtunately I can't renew my passport before its expiration. I wish I could, but...
Also, does I-797 expire when you get H1B stamped? Anybody?
Thanks.

Depends on what country issued your passport. There's a list of countries who have agreements with the USA to extend passport validity for another six months. See this list:

http://foia.state.gov/masterdocs/09fam/0941104X1.pdf

If your country's on the list, you're okay. If not, you can go to the interview, but before they issue the visa, they'll ask you to get a new passport. Why not get a new passport anyway? Do you really want to staple your beat-up old passport to your new passport for the next few years, just because there's one unexpired visa in your old passport? If you absolutely can't get a new passport before your interview and your country's on the list, you're okay.
