I believe you will be handing it over at the citizenship oath ceremony - you don't get to keep it as a souvenir.
I went to a friend's citizenship ceremony a few months ago. You have to give your green card back, so in actual fact there's a gap between giving your green card back and applying for a passport. You only have a citizenship certificate in the interim.

And yup I am aware that you can get a passport pretty quickly, which is what I plan to do!
Those with minor children who automatically become citizens when you do should be aware of what to show to get them passports, too.
