Hello everyone. I've been meaning to write for a long time, but just never got around to it. We received our Green Card at the beginning of May—it's already in our hands.
Let me start our story from the beginning, so that anyone who finds themselves in our situation can have hope.
We came to the U.S. with our family on a tourist visa in October 2022. In January 2023, we applied for asylum. Then, in May 2024, my husband won the DV Lottery. We didn’t know whether to be happy or not, because I had heard before that it’s not possible to get a Green Card through the DV Lottery if you have a pending asylum case.I reached out to several lawyers, and all of them said the chances were low—and, of course, they were asking for a lot of money. In the end, I decided to do everything myself and found your forum. I started reading everything and began by paying the DV visa fee. Then I started filling out the I-485 form using your sample as a guide, and I found a doctor for the medical checkup.
At the beginning of October, we sent all our documents to Illinois. At the end of October, we did our fingerprints, and after that, there was complete silence. I contacted a live agent, we spoke with Tier 2 officers, and everyone just kept saying to wait…
And then, one beautiful day—on March 22—we received our long-awaited interview notice from USCIS. The interview was scheduled for April 24 at 8 a.mOn April 24, we were already at the location by 7:30 a.m.—me, my husband, and our three children (the third one is a U.S. citizen). At 8:15, our officer called us in. We entered the office, and the first thing we did was take an oath to tell the truth. Then we sat down, and he asked for our passports and IDs. After that, he asked for copies of our birth certificates and also requested my diploma.
He said he would be asking questions to both me and my husband. He asked the same questions to each of us, one after the other. The questions were all from the I-485 form: our names, dates of birth, mailing address, our parents’ names, employment details, and then the standard Yes/No questions. He took pictures of me and my husband. Then we signed our I-485 forms for ourselves and for the kids. That was it—he said the interview was over. We asked him what the decision would be, and he said it wasn’t up to him—the DV visa department makes that decision—and that we would receive the result by mail. So, we left the office… Within an hour, I kept checking our USCIS account, but nothing changed. Two hours later, I checked again and couldn’t believe my eyes—it said “New card is being produced.” We were in shock, and at the same time, tears of joy filled our eyes.I also want to add that our interview went very smoothly. The officer was so kind, even made a few jokes.
So, I wish everyone who is dreaming and waiting that they receive their long-awaited Green Card very soon. I’ll write our full timeline below.
