Can a AS8 Green Card holder (derivative asylee) travel to other countries with his passport from his country?

I am a derivative asylee through my father and we recently received our Green Cards. My GC category is AS8, which is Derivative Asylee (AS6 is Principal Asylee, AS7 is spouse).

If I apply for a passport from the consulate of my country of citizenship (assuming they don’t give me problems), can I use that passport to travel to Canada and maybe Europe? I am definitely not returning to my country of origin until at least some time after becoming a US citizen. Would traveling cause any issues when applying for citizenship/issues with CBP at the border?

I know that my father can’t/shouldn’t travel with a passport, but I’m curious about myself.

In my understanding, you could use your national origen passport and even you could (but not your father) travel to your origen country, the reason is because you obtained asylum derived from the persecution your father received, not your. Your status is a benefit of your father to have all his family together with him, AS8 is NOT an status given to you due a persecution made directly to you.

Of course, in my opinion it has some exceptions, for example if during his asylum process your father expressed verbally or written than you specifically or his entire family was victim of direct persecution or he is afraid you could be in the future and now after got a GC you go to your origen country it is bassically contradictory and it could be considered your father was not honest when he obtained the immigration benefit.

So basically it depends of every specific case, but in general term an AS8 "Child of asylee" does not follow the same rules as the principal asylee, but my answer represent just my personal opinion, it is NOT an legal advice due I am NOT a lawyer, so my recommendation for you is to consult an immigration specialist lawyer which one could review specifically your father's case and your situation, but in general I see a good prospect you could not just use your passport but also you could visit your origen country if you wish.
