Anybody can tell me why Canadian citizens need US green card? Canadians may stay within US however long they like, right?

I was a long wait for us -- we went there morning 7:40am, and get tokens with numbers like 200, and on the tokens we were told wating time to be roughly 5 hours, and it was really 5 hours -- we eventually get it done by roughly 2:00pm.
