KCC doesn't send confirmations and I found any emails from them to be barely helpful, if at all. They seem to just send out stock standard paragraphs in reply to what they reckon your question was and it's usually not anything you haven't read already. The first "confirmation" you get is the...

Hey Petamiss! So glad you dropped by to tell us how it all went for you. What a great trip you must have had - 8 weeks! The US is wonderful for travel, with such variety in landscape, food and people from state to state. All the best in NYC!

I'm sure they're used to transporting animals that are nervous and would know how to handle them so that they avoid getting bitten, as best as they could. Our dog seemed a bit distressed and anxious when we picked him up. Understandably so since it's such a strange experience for them but he...

DV2013: LONDON interview date change request

Yes, you can use the visa in your passport for multiple entry. It says: Upon endorsement serves as a temporary I-551 evidencing Permanent Residence for 1 year Endorsement is done when you first enter the US as an immigrant after successfully getting your DV. They stamp it with that date and...

    New immigrant health insurance

lol! Well, the Canadian system is .... um cheaper, and a lot less complicated/convoluted, that's for sure. But I was also underwhelmed by it during our recent year there. It's under a lot of strain. Good for emergency care but not so much for everyday issues. Not enough doctors and extremely...

    New immigrant health insurance

The health system is such a dog's breakfast. We've been investigating what policy to buy ourselves, over the past few weeks. It's taken that long because it's so convoluted, with new terminology to understand: copay, coinsurance, HMO, PPO, out-of-network, URC, blah blah blah. And the more you...

Too bad about the timing of the heatwave and the extra cost but it's good they're being proactive about it and doing what's better for your dog. All the best with that. I know it's a bit nerve-wracking, flying them such a long distance but they'd rather be with you, and vice versa. Well worth it.

Bare Basics/Necessities of Life Upon Entry - Feedback from Successful DV Selectees In USA Please

Many generic medications at commonly prescribed dosages aren't that expensive in the US. Walmart has a $4 Prescription program - $4 for a 30-day supply and oftentimes $10 for a 90-day supply. Of course, you need a prescription from a doctor, which is just the way it works in the US and many...

Do I have to visit SSN office to get my ssn?

No, SSNs don't expire. Your SSN will still be valid. In the Aussie DV2013 thread, one of the forum members had an SSN from previously working in the US and mentioned she would not be needing to get an SSN when she moved to the US permanently via the DV.

Do I have to visit SSN office to get my ssn?

By ticking 'Yes', you should get your SSN in the mail. In about 2 to 3 weeks. That's the way it's supposed to work. In our case, it didn't work out that way. We received our GCs in the mail, about two and a half weeks after POE. We waited another couple of days, no sign of the SSN. So we went...

The bot's done the same to one of my posts in the past. I just report the post (the little button on the bottom left) but like Sm1smom says, it'll regurgitate itself again. An unfortunate blight on many forums.

Add to that, the misconception that antibiotics kill viruses so many think they're useful for garden-variety colds and flu. Yes, the world is in trouble with people popping antibiotics like lollies every time they feel a bit unwell.

    DV embassy interview question

What do your interview instructions tell you? Mine very bluntly said "Do NOT make travel plans outside of Canada" because our passport would be returned later. No time frame specified. Do you have another passport you can travel on?

I didn't even look for any rules or regulations as to how much medications you can bring with you - anywhere. Not to Canada, not to the US. I just brought as much as I could get a prescription for and made sure I had the script with me. It never came up as an issue at any border. Medications...

Bare Basics/Necessities of Life Upon Entry - Feedback from Successful DV Selectees In USA Please

Sounds like a good plan, Momo. Maybe try to rent in the neighbourhood you're interested in, if possible. Or somewhere nearby, so you can get an idea of how it fits for you - are the amenities you want there? how is public transport from there? traffic? general demographics? etc. etc. Not...

Google Street View can be quite helpful. Good for seeing general quality of area. But nothing beats actually going there in person. There are various websites that you can enter the zip code or specific address and it will list reported crimes for there: SpotCrime, NeighborhoodScout, etc...

High crime, no-go areas are the obvious to avoid but there will be areas of any city or town that some will not feel comfortable or happy living in. If you can afford to live in posh neighbourhoods, then you will likely be fine. But if your budget doesn't stretch that far, especially due to...

I agree with Princedriss. It doesn't matter at all. Enter where it is most convenient for you to do so, then move wherever you want. I entered at Washington state border with Canada but am living in Florida.

    Australian Police Check Questions

I took a quick look back at older Aussie DV threads and even those living in Oz got checks based on name and fingerprints. I.e., http://forums.immigration.com/showthread.php?323146-DV-2012-Australia-Winners-Post-Here&p=2566135#post2566135 If you've lived all over Oz, just get the AFP one and...
