Do I have to visit SSN office to get my ssn?

Hi friends,
I have reached US, a week ago. Now i am confused whether to go to the ssn office or not? In the form DS 230 part II, question 43 a and b, i have ticked 'yes', which means i donot have to fill in the forms for ssn again. But i havenot heard any thing from SSA till now. So what should i do? Looking for the response.-

By ticking 'Yes', you should get your SSN in the mail. In about 2 to 3 weeks. That's the way it's supposed to work. In our case, it didn't work out that way. We received our GCs in the mail, about two and a half weeks after POE. We waited another couple of days, no sign of the SSN. So we went to the local SSN office to ask about it, just in case it got missed somehow. We found out that, yes, it got missed somehow. It's not common but it can happen.

A week is a bit soon. You can either wait another week or two, or go to the SSN just to make sure they've got your application processing if you're worried about it. It's a drag not having your SSN because once you get here and start the process of establishing residency, everyone wants your SSN. Perhaps the SSN office can give you the number if it is being processed but the card hasn't arrived. They gave us our numbers when we went to the SSN office and our cards arrived less than a week later.

i had already a social security back when i was student in US, but it was not legal to work with it outside campus, my question :

Do i need to have a new social security when i land in the US ?

No, SSNs don't expire. Your SSN will still be valid. In the Aussie DV2013 thread, one of the forum members had an SSN from previously working in the US and mentioned she would not be needing to get an SSN when she moved to the US permanently via the DV.

Thanks bro, what can i do to get replacement card, how much time do i need for that ? can i apply for jobs without having SSN cards

Princedriss, I'd check up on this. From what I understand, certain SSNs are restricted, which it sounds like yours was - Vichel's example talks about someone who was working there before. I don't know if there is something in the actual number which indicates it is restricted or not, but I'd think best you confirm that your previous student SSN would still be valid. However there was a box on the DS form that asks if you had a previous SSN - I assume you checked yes and gave the number?

Edit: did a quick search. Apparently number same but text on card different, so you'd need a replacement card anyway.

You can visit the nearest SSA office the next day following your arrival (or the very 1st day of your arrival, if you wish :rolleyes:) with your passport which should have an I-155 stamp on it, (this stamp is confirms your LPR status), and apply for a replacement card.

Yes, you can apply for and take up job offers without having the SSN card on hand, as long as you know your SSN. As a matter of fact, you're not required to carry your SSN card around with you or present the card itself to a prospective employer. All you need to know is the number itself.

There is nothing in the SSN itself that marks it as restricted. I have had the same SSN as a non-immigrant, permanent resident and US citizen.

I wrote about this before. You ticked "yes" in your form and you ticked "yes" at the airport when you first landed in US, yet the SSN is not arriving. For some reason although you tick in "yes" multiple times the principle of automatic arrival of the SSN card has not lived up in the practice.
Go to the SSN office on the next day upon arrival to the US. Fill up the form (in the form you write down "legal alien allowed to work"/apply for the ssn immediately/ask for a confirmation. Try several counters n the office. Do not wait for SSN - it can take more than a month in passive waiting

My Old SSN was student SSN, there was a restriction on it that was mentioned on the Card , because there was sentence in the card which says : valid for work only on dhs authorization

I lost this card when i quite US in 2009, now we are in 2013 , i am planning to go back to US as "legal resident" in september, from what i understand , according to the post above, my SSN will remain the same, all what i need is a new SSN card with no restriction

Am i right ?
