Hi all,

I just discovered this wonderful site!

I had my assylum interview 2 weeks ago and went to pick up my "decision" letter yesterday - I'm glad to say I was granted assylum. What next?

1) I have a SS# that has "unauthorized to work" on it. How do I change that?
2) My learner's permit ID expired years ago and I couldn't renew it since I was out of status
3) My current employer doesn't know that I was out of status. Do I have to quit and start afresh with my new assylum status to avoid trouble later when I'm applying for a green card?
4) What benefits to I have coming my way?

The letter granting your asylum and any stamp they may have given you in your passport is your valid work authorization.

You can apply for an EAD on form I-765 but do not have to. It would be a secondary form of ID and easier for an employer to deal with unless the employer uses E-verify then the EAD is not needed at all as soon as your status is in the USCIS computer, that's all you need. One year after the grant of asylum, you can apply for adjustment of status, don't wait, get it over with.

You should complete a new form I-9 for your employer.
 
congratulations you are lucky!!! were you able to check your status online before you pick up your decision???

If you were granted asylum by USCIS (not EOIR), then the system will automatically issue an EAD category AO5 and they will send it to you within 7-10 days. This EAD category AO5 is valid for 2 years.

As soon as you receive your new EAD (A05), go to the SSA office to remove the restriction on your existing SS card. It takes up to 14 days to receive the unrestricted SS card after applying for it. Remember to take with you your EAD (A05) and I-94 when you go to the SSA office

As soon as you receive your unrestricted SS card, go to your employer HR office and tell them that you have an asylee status now. Fill out a new I-9 form and leave the expiration date field blank. You only need to show them the driver license and the unrestricted SS card. You don't need to show them your EAD card. If the HR employee insists of seeing your EAD, then ask him/her to read the I-9 form instructions carefully. There is a section in the I-9 forms that says asylees and refugees don't need EAD and no expiration date for their employment authorization. If they refuse to understand, then tell them that you will have to contact the department of justice to file a complaint. They can't fire you.

Yes you can do that. You can use your I-589 receipt number. You will see the status of your EAD(A05). The status is available online if the asylum application is approved by USCIS (not EOIR).

OK I checked and it says the production of my new card was ordered and I should allow 30 days for my card to be mailed to me. Thanks.

hey assylum, i am little confused cos i have an appointment for tuesday morning to pick up my decision only one day left, till now i tried so many times to check my status online but i couldn't and also i tried to call EOIR phone system to check if my case was referred to the court but they have no information for me, what do you think of my situation?thankyou.

The USCIS system gets updated on the day you pick up your decision if you are approved.
It takes a little bit longer to create a record in the EOIR system if you are referred to the court.

Keep in mind that a recommended approval will not show in the status website.

Sometimes, the decision is not ready for a pick up and they decide to mail it when it is ready.
 
Good news I got my EAD in the mail on Thursday!

I went to DMV on Thursday and passed my written test. The only thing they gave me was a "paper" permit valid for a year but says not valid as form of ID. I was under the impression that I would get a "card" permit like the one i had from NY years ago. Is this a new law? Has anyone else experienced this? Should I apply for a CA ID in the meantime?
