A question about rtd and reentry permit..

So , I have a refugee travel document already , which expires in January 2011. I have a green card that is asylum based. I am going to apply for citizenship hopefully on June 2012. I would like to apply for a reentry permit this time instead of a travel document since the reentry permit is valid for 2 years as opposed to one year with RTD. My reentry permit would be valid then through my citizenship application process. I have always applied for RTD before. I just do not want to spend more money unnecessarily since I will apply for citizenship soon. Do you think there will be a problem because all of a sudden i apply for a reentry permit this time instead of RTD during my citizenship application process? I intend to travel next year and also never to spend more than 6 months outside the USA. I just do not feel it is useful to have a one year document as opposed to one that will last me through my citizenship process. Any input would be highly appreciated..

Wow, my check is processed in less than a week for reentry permit

So I just sent my reentry permit application on 9/16/2010 and I filed g-1145 with my application. I got a text message last night 9/21/2010 saying that my application was received and I will get I-797 in the mail within 7 to 10 days. My check was already cashed today 9/22/2010. So they are pretty fast now i guess. I sent my application to the phoenix lockbox and USCIS said that my application will be processed at the Nebraska service center. This is my first reentry permit and my last travel document until I apply for citizenship and I always applied for refugee travel document since my green card is asylum based. I thought of applying for reentry permit since I really do not want to spend the same kind of money on a document that is gonna last me 2 years as opposed to 1 year with rtd. I will apply for citizenship hopefully in June 2012 and I only intend to use the reentry permit for short trips not exceeding a few weeks to Europe. Just wanted to keep everyone posted. I was wondering though when will i get the biometrics notice? In a month or so. Thanks everyone ...

So starting on november 23 2010, USCIS is charging less for Refugee travel documents to 135 instead of 305 but more for reentry permits and advance parole to 360...this is all excluding biometrics which is now 85 dollars..and they are increasing fees on other applications and keeping others like naturalization unchanged(Thankfully). The link posted above shows the new laws in the federal register.

So I received my finger print notice scheduled for the reentry permit on 10/28/2010. I went in Thursday 10/14/2010 at the San Francisco Application support center to get my fingerprints taken. I walked in and was asked if I had an appointment. I said my appointment is scheduled two weeks from now and I was in the neighborhood and was wondering if I could get my biometrics done now. I was allowed to do that. But there have been no updates yet with regards to my case status on the uscis website regarding my biometrics. When does your case status change? After biometrics are immediately done which is usually what happened before when I applied for the refugee travel document? This is the first time I apply for a reentry permit. I have always had a refugee travel document and I will hopefully apply for citizenship in 2012. Thanks everyone.

so I had a soft update on my reentry permit application...yet my case is still in the acceptance stage..I already did my fingerprints ahead of my scheduled appointment this Thursday October 28..my notice date is September 21, 2010. How long does it take for your case to move from acceptance to review?

Thanks faten..
My case was last updated on october 25 and is still in the acceptance stage. Biometrics were completed on 10/14. It is taking NSC 3 months to process re entry permits , so since my case was accepted september 21 , i would say i should hear something or hopefully my travel document by Christmas time or the new year. I will keep you posted.

Since you got your LPR status through asylum, I think you will get a refugee travel document. Please let us know what you do get.

Since I am an LPR through asylum, I qualify for BOTH refugee travel document and re entry permit. I applied for a re entry permit since it is valid for 2 years as opposed to one year with a refugee travel document, even though i have no plans of staying outside the USA over 1 year at anytime or visiting COP. I think it is a waste of time and money to apply for 3 months to get something and once you get it you have to renew it in less than a year if you plan on traveling again.

Regarding the new requirements for RTD... Is it just me, or do we not have to submit photos anymore with the application? The way I understood, they now take your picture during the biometric appointment? I'm a little confused. I need to apply within the next week or so...

You do not submit photos with the application anymore. You will get your photo taken at the biometrics appointment.

Update on reentry application

So I have had no updates at all on my re entry permit application. My case has been accepted since September 21 and I did my biometrics on 10/14/2010. I had a soft update on 10/25/2010 and that was it. I am wondering what is going on since my case still says it is in the acceptance stage. Should i worry about it? This is my first reentry permit by the way. I have always applied for a refugee travel document before.

So ..now it has been exactly 3 months since my reentry permit application has been accepted. I do not know what to expect. The current processing time is 3 months for the Nebraska Service center. I did my biometrics on 10/14/2010. Should I put a service request on my case? My case still says acceptance. This is my first reentry permit by the way.

Cafeconleche,

I did not request my reentry permit to be expedited. But the processing times currently posted on the USCIS website say it is taking three months. And this is the first time I apply for a reentry permit. I need to travel to England by March 2011. Hopefully I will get my reentry permit by then. Should I open a service request or just wait?
