Where is the Best?

NH is cool too

Northern New England (Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire) is one of the most beautiful places in US.

For NH,
Pros
-No state tax, no sales tax. How about that?
-Close to Boston and easy access to all northern MA companies.
-Housing/rents moderate, no crime literally. Friendly people (kind of affluent people as lot of retirees).
-Spring, Summer and Snow in winter is beautiful and Fall is heaven.
-NH cities (I feel towns) win or rated pretty high for the best small cities to live in USA frequently.

Cons
-All companies pretty much in Southern NH. Above that just a tourist place.
-Made of small towns though Boston is an hours drive.
-Could have severe winters (But I found it beautiful and one can enjoy the beauty of all four seasons)
-Could be very cold in winter and too much snow could also be hell. (Not as bad as Wisconsin, etc.)

I saw lot of people complaining about Boston but I liked it. There is no perfect place. If you work in Boston downtown commute is hard but that is pretty much the same for every major city. One of the best public transportaion systems within US (though old). Suburbs are good but rent/housing on the higher side (obviously pays are also on the higher side). Boston has some of the best colleges in US and the world. Lots of major companies and also literally every IT company with big presence in Boston and also along I-95 and I-495. You could live closer to I95/I495 if you are employed there. Even in this downturn, MA has one of the lowest unemployment rates compared to other states.

Live in a decent MA suburb. Work in Boston/I95/I495. Head on to NH/MA/VT/Western MA/Cape Cod for quiet fun(2-3 hrs drive). Head to Boston or NY(4 hr drive) for city buzz/cultural activites occassionally. If Indian, head to NJ (4 hr drive) occasssionally.
 
Any one living in Florida

Hello Everyone

I read through the entire discussion but didn\'t find much reference to FL.

We recently got our GC approved and are looking for a better place
to move to during these summer months and considering FL to move to.
We are in MA now.

Below is my criteria.

1. Low cost of living (Housing/Rent)
2. Don\'t want snowy weather in winter
3. Atleast reasonable job opportunities.

We are thinking about moving to Florida.
Is there any one who can throw some light about living there?

How are the IT jobs there?

(My spouse (non IT) already has a transferrable job to any where in US)
I am in IT, with out a job and tired of it.
Which part of Florida is best to live?
Is there any things we need to worry about a specific place in FL?
How is Tampa area in general.

Please post your experiences.

I am also planning for FL.

If you are a pharmacist, you must want to got here. Excellent job opportunity. Higest paid in any state of USA. You can have a million dollar Long Island, NY sea front house in $250,000 in FL.
 
Try MA, Boston, but NJ is not bad, depends where you are living, also case of luck

 
 
My words MA is the place to live but its expensive. You know..

goto monster.com and search for job of your profession, which ever state has maximum jobs , you should move to that state, what do you think

I am in Boston only

I am in boston,MA and am fedup of paying high rents and also with real estate.
For 30 years we don\'t want to pay 3+k/month mortagage staying here,
(ie. Both have to work to pay mortagage)
and we couldn\'t take the snow.

"Habib", What u said about pharmacy prof in FL is true.
And my spouse is a pharmacist, But I am a bit worried about loosing my career prospects in FL.
So if any one living in FL (in IT field) can share their experiences I aprreciate it.

Thats why I am asking around.

FL climate is good (close to indian climate) as my friend says.
But lot said IT openings are not much there.

I liked Richmond, VA provided you find a job there.

I have been to so many cities in usa.
I liked only two boston and athens (close to atlanta, georgia)

I found almost everything at these two cities.
temple, desi movies, restaurants, almost no crime, i was used to go out at 2 or 3 in the morning. less traffic, less desi's, beautiful and less crowded down town, decent and nice clubs, and best thing i found people very nice there.
I am planning to move down to athens after immigration.

Oh man I started hating the Winter...I am really interested moving to California unfortunately there are not lot of discussion about California May be just because of this thread from VSC.

Could anybody elaborate pros and cons moving to California’s there any best cities in CA

I have been living in BayArea (San Francisco, San Jose, Silicon Valley) for the last 7 years.

Disadvantages

-- Rents are very high. At one time I use to pay $1900.00 for 2 bed/2 bath. I know people who have paid $ 2400.00 for the same.

-- Buying houses is a luxury. House prices start around 500 + and go into millions.

-- Taxes are high.

-- Beware of Earth Quakes

-- If you are in IT work pressures and expectations are high at times.

Advantages

-- Excellent Climate. Does not snow round the year. Winter temperatures are 20-30 . Summer Temperatures are 70-90.

-- Many other attractions like Monterey Aquariam (one of the best in the world), 6 Flags-Marine world in Vallejo, Gloden Gate Bridge, Muir woods (Huge world famous redwood trees), Historic Alcatraz island, Drive on US 1 (tonnes of beaches Half moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Bug Sur, Hearst Castle etc), Calistoga Hot springs, Napa Vineries (vine tasting), Clear Lake, Big Basin, Fishermans warf, SFO dwontown, Loambard Street, crooked sreet, Coit tower (Oh god the list is so huge) etc etc are good for one day trips.

-- Weekend trips : If you like snow and would like to ski, Tahoe is just 4 hours away. Reno is another 1/2 hour from Tahoe if you are interested in casinos and Gambling. Mount Shasta (14000 + Feet - This is a really montain. A challege for professional trekkers too), Lake Shasta - Biggest Man made lake - Very good for Boating - Rent a boat a spend the weekend on the Lake , Shasta Caverns - On top of the mountain - this trip is not be missied,BURNEY FALLS - Supposed to be 8th wonder of the world, Mt.Lassen - One of the most active volcanos in the country, Yosemite - Many Waterfalls and montains, Sequoia Park - One of th largest and biggest redwood trees are here , Crater lake - a unique lake created by a crater, ofcourse Preserve LA - Universal studios, Disney world, Sandiego - Sea World , Las Vegas and Grand Canyon and Co for the Long weekends.

-- Best schools in the Country - Stanford, Berkely etc.

-- Very diverse communities, mostly I think Asians like Chinese , Japanese , Vietnamese, Indian etc. These are also many mexicans. Will find many Authentic cuisines.

-- Both wife and husband will be able to find employment within driving distances.

How about Detroit. It's a nice place and affordable...you can live at Grosspointe.....about 5 min from detroit.....think about it...
 
I am in Atlanta area for 3 years, all the advantages Pingpong02 told about Bayarea are present in Atlanta area and none of the disadvantages he mentioned are there in Atlanta area.

The only big difference might be schools but those are not that bad. My kids are of elementary age and the county in which I am living in got "A" grade last week in schools so I pretty much like Atlanta area a lot.
 
NH = absolutely No TAX

TX,FL = No State tax, but sales tax.

VT, NH, ME, Upstate NY = Peaceful and Beatiful. You will lonely after couple of months. Keep you shovel ready.

CA = Gas is expensive and prepare to live in the car.

All West coast = You wakeup at least 3hrs late. Me and my friends use "3hr late" to tease the west coast fanatics. Beleive me, it works very well.

All West coast and north east = complain about weather

NY City, NJ - Excellant travel connection to anywhere in the world, best to go to India
PA (EAST), DL, MD, VA, DC, CT, MA = Decent connection.

Anything below VA till FL: All nice places. But kinda of lazy. It takes few minutes to get a coffee, even when you have right change.

I think phily will be great, less tax and you do not miss much about NJ. And you can enjoy four seasons. And they have decent sports clubs. And you can go to DL for shopping no taxes.
 
Philly is one of the worst areas you could live in.
If it were not for NYC salaries, living in NJ would be useless too.
