Waiting Asylum decision

Hello guys,

A friend of mine has been waiting for his asylum interview for over 3 years now. It's interesting that while checking his status using the USCIS case tracker, it shows as "Application is Pending" even before the interview. He is very concerned about it? Is it normal? Any information would be highly appreciated.

normal, although “application pending” sometimes should show before “the next step is…”

He will be waiting for a while, currently they are reviewing asylum case from year 2015 to 2016.

For year 2022 will be more waiting.

Hi Alex, thanks for sharing your timeline. I just got married and want to add my spouse, but I heard it's tricky and messy. Did you have any advice? Did you do it with a lawyer or on your own? I see that the second time you added her, was in Florida, and I am also in Florida,
Thank you so much in advance, I really appreciate any help
Hi, my spouse is a man. I used lawyer and visited USCIS by myself and it helped to accelerate.
So my advice is to come there, get paper with requested docs and come back with docs.
Did you already have interview?

So if nothing changed after that and you still don’t see other status you are the first person I know who got approval without fees were waived!
It changed to card is mailed to me yesterday. I think this status doesn’t make any meaning. I was ready for referral when i read the comments about decision mailed but the AO told me that he approved my case the day of the interview so i was kind of hopeful.( تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ)

Thanks for your reply, and apologies for my mistake.
Yes, the interview was like 3 weeks ago (so we are against the clock)
So, do you recommend bringing the documents in person? I need to find out if my office (Tampa) is accepting the documents in person. I think they are only accepting electronic files

may I ask how long it took to add your spouse to the case?

Hello everyone,

I completed my asylum interview at the Houston office about two years ago and have still not received a decision.

A recent FOIA request revealed that two weeks after my interview, the officer who interviewed me finished his assessment and found me credible and described my story as detailed and consistent. However, the officer concluded that there was no past persecution or a well-founded fear of future persecution, so he recommended that my case be referred to immigration court. To me, this justification is unconvincing and somewhat contradictory, especially since I know several individuals from my country, in similar circumstances, who were granted asylum at the office in recent years. I also obtained information that a new asylum officer was assigned to my case just three days after the initial officer completed his referral assessment. However, I did not receive any records regarding the second officer's evaluation.

Follow-up inquiry through my congressman turned out that the case is currently undergoing a background check with USCIS. I also contacted the asylum office directly, and their response confirmed that no decision has been made yet.

Does anyone have any insight into this type of situation? Why have I still not received a decision when the interviewing officer completed his assessment just two weeks after my interview, which was almost two years ago? Why would USCIS continue to keep my case in background check for so long, whereas my case would be referred to court regardless of the background check outcome? And why was a new officer assigned to my case just three days after the original officer completed his assessment?

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

If the docs in your file, no need. If they are new, just bring them with you, just in case. I brought originals and he did not even look at them.

In person is the best, it took less than one hour after I gave docs, but it was special attention to my situation (I was waiting about 1 year when my lawyer sent docs by mail and they lost it, only found 6 months later after FOIA request). And it was already more than 2 years after interview
