Visiting to Neighboring country other then COP.

I am planning to visit neighboring country (India) other then my COP in March in order to see my relatives for one month. We have open boarder between India (No passport or any documents are required to cross the boarder). People are saying its very risk to get back to US once I go India as we are open boarder and hard to establish whether I visit COP or not. Would you please advise me whether I should go or no?

1/ How to explain officer in port that I did not visit COP?
2/ is it really inadmissible due to visit open boarder neighboring country?
3/ Does anybody has same experience before?

Your advised would be greatly appreciated.

My father went to a neighbor COP in South America for 4 days to see his elderly mother that was in that country for a few days. He didn’t have any problems in the POE (LAX) when he came back.

I was very concerned and worried with his trip, since some SA countries have “a no-passports agreements” between them (not really an "open border" though), but very similar. I was afraid that immigration would think that he went to COP, even though, my father didn’t want to, nor was planning to go to COP.

So, I tried very bad to change his mind, and make him cancel his trip, but his family ties were stronger than me. He saw his mother in that 3rd country, he came back to the USA with not a single question asked…Two months later his mother passed away. He was very happy that he saw his mom for the last time in that neighbor country.

Although he did not have any problems at POE he may be questioned about that trip later on; even though he didn’t do anything wrong. So, in case we have to prove his innocence in an immigration court, I asked him to keep all hotel receipts, car rental receipts, pictures, credit card purchases receipts and all documents that prove that he was in that country for the length of his trip, and I have it stored with all our immigration documents. It may sound a bit paranoic, but better safe than sorry.
I personally would not take that risk, but I could understand the desire of my father to see his mother.

I didn't know that there is still an open border between India and Nepal. I thought after the plan hijack, security beefed up and now you are supposed to show your passport while crossing border?

Asylee13....! Believe me there are no passport control area. All you need is simple ID that probe you are Nepali or Indian. More then half of my family relatives are in India. I want to see them. My mum is ready to come to india if I go there. I would go Nepal crossing boarder but I don't wanna do this puting myself in risk. but I am very much worried how I could convience POE if they asked me whether I went COP or not..............

Nepz06, are you talking about crossing by road or Air. Because, if i remember correctly, last time i went by air, i was asked for an id. I showed them my NP.

It's been 10 years for me. That's why i wanted to check. Did you do recently?

Last time I crossed the boarder was in 2004 Nov by air ( it was after plane hijack) and I just showed them Nepali DL. when you cross the border by land (by bus or train) you will not be asked any documents (I guessed this is the most liberal and open two countries boarder in the world).... NEPZ06
