Visiting mexico by road

Mexico now requires permanent residents to have GC + passport. But, asylee don't have passport. Any one tried crossing tijuana border from San Diego with just GC , please share.
I just want to park my car on this side and walk over.
Also, can we stay there for couple of days or it is only 1 day entry ?
 
There is no mexican immigration officers at the border. YOu can just get in without any inspection so nobody is going to ask for a passport or GC for that matter.
 
A couple of months ago I called the mexican consulate in Ga to ask the same question. They told me that GC+RTD is fine to go to mexico by air...hope this this will help.
