US Passport Fees Increasing Starting July 13th 2010

Which laws say US citizens need to carry ID? There is no such law. People are reuired to carry Driver license only when driving

Several states have laws that require individuals to carry identification. For example, New York State DMV issues official non-driver ID cards to those who don't drive. If you are walking down a street and a police office stops you, he/she has the option of detaining you and taking you to a police precinct until your identity is verified.

Here's an interesting post that I found on Yahoo Answers:

Hmm I think you're right there's no universal law. I thought there was, but that's because this country seems to be getting stricter by the minute.

If there is going to be a national ID, I believe it would be more accetable to immigrants (nt inclduing undocumneted ones) than to natural born citizens.
PRs are already required to carry GC anyway and natualizaed citizens tend to apply for passport and passport cards. If tehy have the card, it would
be a pity if teh card has no use.

The problem is law does not require citizens to carry citizenship proof, what the cop can do to you after you
tell them you are a US citizen?
The cop can say he/she doesn't believe you, and detain you until you have provided satisfactory proof. Which may require somebody to go to your home and fetch the proof and bring it to the police station or immigration detention center. So if you go to visit AZ and leave your GC or US passport back home in another state, you could have a long long time waiting in detention until somebody delivers the proof.
