I received a form about updating our status with the SSA after becoming US citizen. Is this really neccessary?
Yes, you have to update your record with the SSA before you get a new job
E-verify system relies on SSA records if you are US citizen.
USCIS doesn't update SSA records automatically. You have to go there and ask SSA to update it.
just go and do it. Some sort of national ID card might be on the horizon. It is in your interest to have your SSA records updated. You will get a new SS card but the number stays the same. The SSA office is also located in 26 Federal Plaza.
It doesn't really matter in which order, PP or SSA first. But similar like you, I first wanted to get a PP first so I have a valid travel document. I'll get my SS card updated once my PP is in. Feels like a natural sequence for me.I am planning to apply for US passport tomorrow. Do you suggest I get my SSA status updated first before I apply for a passport or do you think I should get my US passport first? My plan is to apply for a US passport first.

And yes, I'm one of the slackers who still has the original SS card with the "valid for work only with INS authorization", so I'm really due to update my status with the SSA
passport first then the SS card.
