Trip 8 months without rep?

Hello everybody,

I'm DV winner and just entered USA first time, waiting for SSN and GC , etc. My situation is, that I can't spend this year in the U.S. more than 2 weeks due to family emergency and also school obligations.

So I am at least trying to open a bank account and get some ID. I would love to come to the United States next year (after approx. 8 months of absence) for good!

However, I guess, 2 weeks are not enough to get a reentry permit!

But after that 8 months I will have my university finished and be ready to start living here and maybe even continue on doctor degree on university. And then I dont plan to leave US, but if yes only for a short time.

Is my plan OK? Facing problems?

Thank you & have a nice day!

Since you will be back in the US for good after a single 8 month long visit, is it possible for you to make a short visit mid-way through? Say a week long visit after 4 months?

Triple Citizen: I will try to come here after 4-5 months, but aint sure. It's highly possible that I wouldn't be able to handle it.

Dedo: what do you mean?

Actually how much is likely that I'd not be admitted back?

I am not sure for those with DV who land. How long they should stay after landing before they can travel back? Any idea?

I just wonder if can find here anybody who ever had serious problem with admission to the U.S. after stay out for more than 6 months ??? during the 1st trip after GC

You have to maintain a residence in the US. If you can't prove that when you try to re-enter, they keep your GC and send you back to your home country.

Great. See my situation. Coming after 9 months without reentry permit.

Was in Europe due to study purposes and already have been admitted to the U.S. university (some kind of proving paper in hand). Non driver ID and bank account opened.

Does this show appropriate ties to the U.S. if I am questioned?

Also same as octopus, this will be the very first prolonged trip

Will be problem with admission?

Once you stay outside over 6 months, the presumption is that you abandoned residence and the burden of proof is on you to convince them otherwise. We don't know for sure if either of you will have problems upon reentering the US. It all depends on how strongly you present your case and how strict the officer is. All we can say is that you have potentially set yourself up for problems by staying over 6 months, and from what you have stated here your ties to the US appear to be weak (you don't have a house, spouse and kids, car, job, etc. in the US like many others do).

We don't know how the immigration officer will react. What you have is better than nothing, but not as good as having house/car/job/spouse etc.
