Am planning a trip to St.Croix which is a territory of the US. I am currently in the mainland US and have an I-797. I still haven't got the visa stamping on my passport.

Can I travel to St.Croix & back to mainland USA using my valid passport & valid I-797 or do I need to get the H-1 stamp in my passport before travel.

You can go without your passport technically, but they sometimes check in the USVI because people can easily sneak in from the BVI and other islands by boat and what not, so take your passport and other documentation just in case.

We have to pass through customs and immigration when you leave the island. The problem is will the I-797 which is a valid document to work within the Unitd States be enough?

Oh yeah, I just checked some sites, and it looks like they do immigration checks even from the US. Interesting. To be honest, I don't know how the treat I-797s, but I would think that it's proof of legal presence in the US, so it shouldn't be a problem. But, maybe you should call CBP?
