Travel as dual citizen query

I was wondering when one checks in at the airport to travel to the EU and then return to the US, if one has both an EU passport and a US one as a dual citizen, do you show just the EU one to the clerk at the check-in counter, or both? Has anyone encountered any glitches when checking-in as a dual citizen?

You might as well show your US passport since you can travel visa-free to the EU and prove you are in the US legally at the same time. If you choose to show your EU passport instead, and if they ask how you've been in the US, show your US passport. It should be no problem. When you return to the US, you MUST show your US passport.

As a US citizen, you are supposed to show your US passport when exiting and entering the US.

EU countries don't require a visa for US citizens to visit, so showing your US passport would be sufficient for both showing you are in the US legally and that you have authorization to visit the destination country.

Then when you arrive in the EU, show either your US passport or EU passport depending on the rules of the particular country. If you are a citizen of the specific EU country you arrive in, their rule probably will be that you must show their passport to enter, not a US or any other passport.

But if you arrive in another EU country of which you are not a citizen, you can show either passport -- unless the EU in general has a rule that if you are an EU citizen you must use an EU passport to enter any EU country when coming from outside the EU.

If I intend to visit my original country of citizenship for longer than 3 months, I will show its passport too, after showing US passport. If I go for a short time, I usually don't bother because that country does not require any kinds of passenger manifest.

The bottom line is that check-in agents see dual citizens on a regular basis, so it's not a big deal for them.

I always show my US passport when boarding a flight to Toronto from a US airport. Only when I land at Pearson do I switch passports and use my Canadian one to enter Canada.

Last time I only used my US passport to go to Canada crossing into Blaine. No issues about not using Canadian passport into Canada.

I second this approach. Show the US passport at the ticket counter and when going through security. Show your EU passport when you go through passport control in Europe. Simple and it works.
