Taking the Oath on the interview day and travel with the certificate of naturalization

Hi everyone

Form M476says "In some places, you can choose to take the Oath the same day as your interview. If that option is not available, or if you prefer a ceremony at a later date, USCIS will notify you of the ceremony date with a “Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony” (Form N-445)."

Questions:
1. I am wondering if you can take the oath the same say as my interview day in Dallas, TX?

2. If you take the oath, I believe I will surrender my permenant resident card and get a certificate of naturalization. Can I travel with my passport from my home country and return the US with a certificate of naturalization?

Thanks

It is possible to leave on your foreign passport (provided it is valid based on that country's citizenship law), but you would then have to apply for a US passport in your destination country (and explain there why you left without a US passport).

from 8 USC 1185:

(b) Citizens
Except as otherwise provided by the President and subject to such limitations and exceptions as the President may authorize and prescribe, it shall be unlawful for any citizen of the United States to depart from or enter, or attempt to depart from or enter, the United States unless he bears a valid United States passport.

maybe you can get permission to travel without a passport? i can't imagine why someone would do this, unless in an extreme emergency, when a US passport can be obtained as quickly as the same day in many jurisdictions.

True, passports can take a long time to be issued. Good point. I have also heard of people sending their passport applications, then leaving, and then having someone check their mail and sending them their passports abroad so they can re-enter the country with them.

You can get a passport in 2 hours flat & I did that. So I dont know why would someone make it so complicated for themselves and go through the embassy route...also it says above that departing without a US passport is a big no no..so dont do it.

Once you enter, you will be asked how you left...

Especially when the CBP officer at POE sees that the passport date is after you left the US. The law allows DHS them to fine you for not leaving with US passport, although I don't know if they enforce this. Best not to take the chance.

If you lose your US passport while outside the US you can get a Transportation Letter to enable you to reenter without a passport. But I don't know of any such emergency permission that can be obtained within the US.

A WHTI-compliant Enhanced Driver's License is another form of "exception" to enter without a passport, but not for air travel, and I don't know if there are any DMVs that would issue one in the same day for a new citizen.

Yes you can, provided your interview is early enough in the day (before 11:00 I think). I believe there is also now a satellite passport agency office in Dallas so that you could then go and get a same-day passport too.
