Sponsor questions for overstayed relative

I am sponsoring my mother for resident visa. I am a US born citizen of 32 age and married. My mother is consulting a lawyer to apply for resident green card though I feel she is being worked over meaning I believe they are asking for her to supply documents that as I have read aren't required. For example: she was asked to bring 2 passport photos for both her and me. I am not the one who is applying for residency so I do not see why I would have to give photos as easy as I can get them it seems to me as I have read for I-130 and I-765 and on none of these asks for sponsors photos. My mother came to the US in 98 and overstayed. I will be accompanying her to see the lawyer and I would like information on what the sponsor needs to supply other than birth certificate, ssn, ID and proof of income. Please if someone could help us out. I feel like they are basicly asking 1 too many things to raise the cost of her fees.

Why is she bothering to use a lawyer? Does she have any complications apart from the overstay?

If there are no special complications like a criminal record or other immigration violations, ditch the lawyer and file on your own, or hire the lawyer only for a one-time consultation to review the paperwork after you have already prepared everything yourself.

Read the instructions for the various forms ... I-130, I-485, I-765, I-864.

Don't file I-131 because it will be useless due to her overstay. I bet that lawyer is encouraging her to file I-131 and charging another fee for it.

The petitioner's photo is only required for the G-325 in a SPOUSAL case. Ditch the dummy who asked for that stuff and save the aggravation and excess fees.

Yes, I will be calling today to ask what exactly and why they are asking for documents not needed. I have already read all I-130, I-485, I-765, I-864. None state that they need my photos so I will reply back today. I want to know exactly what form he is trying to fill out for her. Hopefully it won't be I-131. And no, she has not been through any sort of interview. We are barely beginning the process of filling out paperwork.

Just spoke to the executive assistant (secretary) and she said the photos were for I-130 and after telling her that the application does not ask for my photos. She asked the lawyer and that is what she relayed to me. Let me further explain. Last year I wanted to apply for my son's N-600. My wife and mother went in to consult with same people and they told her that we would need lots of documents and that it would take long. I then researched the requirements and filled out the paperwork myself gathered the paperwork myself and went with a immigration notary public friend that revised them. My son is now a US citizen and did not take or wasn't as hard as these people made it out to be. And that is why I have some distrust.

Question for those who can answer. Does the I-130 need passport photos of the petitioner? Thank you.

No. A copy of the passport itself may be provided as proof of US citizenship, but passport photos of the petitioner are not required for a non-spousal petition.
