Son never got a green Card when they came into the country...

I applied for my Wifes I130 in 2020.
Fastforward to 2024, my kid was born and I added him to the I130.
They both came in Nov of 2024.

Now, I paid the Immigrant fee for my wife and her Green Card was mailed. I never got anything for my son and never was asked to pay a fee. I reached out to them through the PORTAL and got some nonsense back

I am about to get my Citizenship in about a month and I am wondering a few things....

- Should my Son have received a Green Card? best next steps..
- I know my son automatically becomes eligible for US Citizenship when I get it mine. What does the process of converting him fully look like?

Thank you all!

I believe he needs to pay the immigrant fee before he can get the plastic green card. But since he will automatically become a US citizen (not just "eligible for citizenship"; he actually automatically and involuntarily becomes a citizen) when you naturalize anyway, it might not be worth it anymore. He can apply for a US passport after you naturalize, with your Certificate of Naturalization plus his immigrant visa, stamped upon entry, as his proof of permanent resident status. He can also apply for a Certificate of Citizenship, but that costs a ton more.

Just to confirm, your son entered on an immigrant visa?
if so then the response above is correct - would just wait until you become a citizen and then get his passport, which you can apply for at the same time as you apply for your own.

Correct. He came here on an Immigrant Visa.
Thank you both soo much!!

Last question. I know all the possible advantages of getting a CoC but I do not see myself spending 1300USD plus right now on getting a CoC for him..what have you found in your experience is best..go ahead and get the CoC??

A passport will be fine for everything you need. I’m paranoid so I got a CoC for my kid (for reasons I’m not going into now ) but it’s almost certainly not necessary.

Do yourself and your kid a favor by taking care of things now would be my recommendation to you. Life happens! A couple of threads below you may want to go through to see the kind of nightmare your kid could be exposed to in the future if they do not have their own CoC because their parent isn’t willing to spend $1300 now to protect them - FYI: the cost of a CoC is more likely to increase than decrease with time.

Secondary Evidence for Passport
Applying for Certificate of Citizenship - evidence of physical presence of parent
