Hi guys,

Are we supposed to get a SSN after we "activate" the green card? I thought we had to book an appointment to get one.

This post suggests that they did?

If you did consular processing there’s a box you checked on the ds260 that will automatically trigger social security card production when you enter on your immigrant visa. This differs from AOS, where people have to go into an SSA office to apply for a new or update their existing SS card.

There is a box to automatically issue an SS card on approval on the I-485 too. But it has been hit or miss whether people actually get it.

If I did not receive it and have left the US, what's my best course of action? I've emailed the relevant Federal Benefits Unit and that does take a bit of time before they reply.

It will be mailed to the same address as you put for your green card. Presumably that is someone you trust to keep it for you or courier to you? It’s normally pretty quick, within 2 weeks of your entry as LPR.

Thank you, it is with a friend that I trusted. I got my green card for him but it’s been over a month since I got the green card and they haven’t received the SSN yet.

I can’t call the SSN department either because I’m overseas (and will likely be for a while, so I have applied for a reentry permit). The main reason I need it is to pay my taxes.

You will need to visit your nearest SSA building to apply for the SSN in this case when next you're in the US. You cannot do anything tangible about it by phone.
