Social Security Card after Green Card

Does anybody know if the Social Security office automatically sends a new SS card to reflect the changed immigration status or do we need to go to SS office and apply for a new card?
 
Just to clarify, if you want a new card you need to apply.

But there is no need to get a new card, unless it states 'ineligible to work'.

I know one guy whom they sent new card without his application and his office visit. He got new card having original one couple of months ago.

But in his case it was consular processing. SSA people say that sometimes USCIS informs them about status change.

Usually you have to go to them with your application for the new card to change the old one.

Yes, CP is different. CBP (not USCIS; USCIS isn't involved past the I-140) will automatically forward an application from the POE where the immigrant visa holder is processed.
 
About five years ago or so, a friend of mine was questioned at the airport once after he was coming back from a trip abroad. He had become a USC but had not notified the SSA about his status change. He didn't get into any trouble or anything, but just to avoid any hassle, my recommendation would be to get a new card.

From a personal experience, when I went to get my new SS card recently, the officer at the window gave me a puzzled look and had at attitude of that this was not necessary. I did not wanted to take any chances so I had them do it anyway.

Why on earth would one be showing an SSA card to a CBP officer?

Was he applying for their job?!

He didn't show his SS card to anyone and neither was he asked for it. We could only guess that the US immigration computers are linked into the SSA computers and they do a check of some sort (perhaps part of the US-VISIT program). He was simply questioned on why his status in the SSA showed LPR rather than USC.

You can show drive license and new SS card (with no restrictions) only
to fill I-9 and to be hired on the legal basis.

Othewise you have to show the green card.
