S. 1932 Status

Next Step!

The Senate has finally seen the light of reason and voted overwhemingly against the Byrd Amendment. This measure will provide much needed relief to the American Economy and also to affected individuals.

Now, you everyone needs to contact their House Representatives to ensure these hard-won provisions stay in on the joint House-Senate Reconciliation.
Select your state and district and start contacting your congresssman/woman today. I've already called and emailed mine.

I'm sure Loo Dobbs will do his usual ranting on this today evening:)

Commensense knows no bounds!

Greatest nation on earth has at last shown that there are people across party lines with commonsense in rejecting the lies and concoctions of the idiotic senator from WV, by throwing the Byrd shit to Atlantic and Pacific oceans.Hats off to those people who worked to the last minute to get the message of truth to their senators.
For my humble part,I had e-mailed and called almost every single senator except that senile moron from Virginia, who walks on two cains.
Next we have to keep sending them thank you notes and their continued support for it to get passed in the combined conference, and by the President.

Everyone should congratulate and Thank Mathews Oh(ohlaw@immigration-law.com), 'reporter' of http://www.immigration-law.com. He is the person who made the immigration community aware that Byrd is coming with this amendment. AILA gets benefited from the immigration community but never gives any info to the community. It requires password and logins for reading the info on their website that comes from federal sources. Federal sources think that AILA is a liason between them and immigration community. What a pity?

A pretty convincing argument is the one that the visa number incrase is necessary to relief people who has been in the greencard card queue for many years already. It is not necessarily about bringing more people in. Also, we should send letters to the immigration reduction leaders (NumbersUSA, FAIR). If we get some of them to understand our cause, the opposition may be minimized and we are fine from there. I will express that the greencard applicants do not benefit from H1B increase, but it is a reality that an optimal number of H1Bs are necessary to keep America competitive and avoid more offshoring, therefore the S.1932 bill is legitimate.

Thank you Senator Mel Martinez and those who voted NO!

I know that there is a little percentage of hispanics in this forum, but I am one of them, Thank you Senators Mel Martinez and Ken Salazar for voting No!

Muchas Gracias Senador Martinez por votar NO!

By the way, Both West Virginia Senators voted Yes: Byrd obviously and the other democrat.

I studied in West Virginia University for 6 months, and I can tell that WV is a state for retirees, the immigration there is minimal!!

Bryd's ammendment

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/L...ote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=1&vote=00295

Somehow this says

Statement of Purpose: To replace title VIII of the bill with an amendment to section 214(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to impose a fee on employers who hire certain non-immigrants.

Somhow this doesnt say anything abt the senator's opposition to the EB3 reforms. I hope, this recapturing thing is not another ammendment.

Can someone please confirm?

Thanks

I used to get updates from my friends about latest development. Today they asked me to join in to forum and send faxes. I sent faxes and also called couple of senaor offices.
Are we going to send Fax or emails to all Budget Committee Members and House Budget Committee now? Are we going to mail same letter.

Can someone please post the letter format for FAX or EMAIL. Let us ROCK !

Great JOB people ... we all stepped up and got things done. I heard Boxer and Feinstein were supporting the amendment ... but probably all our faxes and letters finally changed their opinion.
However ... one quick question: does this bill allows us (victim of retro) to apply 485 and get EAD and AP before real GC ?
Thanks and again CONGRATS to all.

i guess what happens next ? reconcilliation between the house and budget bills..?
is someone willing to draft a letter or talking points when calling reps and senators...?

Thanks Everyone

I truly appreciate everyone's efforts for urging the senators to vote "NO" on this bill...Many of you took time off from work and dedicated your efforts on this.. I bow for you !! We will have to make sure that the same work is carred out again to the congressmen now.

for my humble part i faxed about 30 letters and made about 15 calls to various senators...

Is there some website where we can send faxes from ?.. sending from fax machine takes long for a repetitive task like this... Please post other ideas as to how we can get the message conveyed to the congressmen more effectively...

Also other than knowing about this bill discussion from immigration-law.com, I also got an email from AILA on Tuesday evening (November 1) alerting me to urge senators to vote against the Byrd amendment. I would request all of you to register with AILA to receive updates on any immigration matters so that you are notified on time as to what is happening in the senate/congress.

17/22 is a very good ratio

Out of the 22 Senate Budget Committee members only FOUR voted for the Byrd Ammendment. One senator did not vote. Even if we include him in the yes camp, 17/22 is a very good ratio.

Voted Yes on Byrd Amdt. No. 2367

Jeff Sessions (R–AL)
Debbie Stabenow (D–MI)
Robert C. Byrd (D–WV)
Russell D. Feingold (D–WI)

Did not Vote

Jon Corzine (D–NJ)

amendment has been defeated.
when is the voting going to occur on the budget bill in the senate?
after that the reconciliation with the house bill will need to take place.

Arlen Spector

We all should be proud of ourselves. Congrates to all of us.

If you remember my earlier post that I contacted senator Arlen Spector's office and his staff asked me whether senator should vote yes or no on the amendement.

Well, I called just now to thank the Senator office for votting NO. His staff member lady was so nice to me and said thanks for bringing important matters to senator's attention and because of feedback from people of like you we are able to make correct decision.

Guys, as we all know that House Bill does not have provision for EB and H1B langauge. Also, House members are junior politicians compared to senators. There are only 100 senators (2 per state) compared to around 500 house members. Senators are much more mautured and can easily understand the issue while house members will be difficult to convince. So, we need a greater and stronger effort to educate House Memebers.

Also, in the final process there will be a conference call between House and Senate for working on the differences on the bill. For this, we need to find out that which senators and congressmen will be part of the conference. These senators and congressman will be the final people who will insert the immigration EB and H1b language in the Final Bill that becomes the law.

Lot of work needs to be done. Let's not stop and continue working until it becomes the Law.

Thanks for everyone's suppport and Keep it up....

7/39 is another good number

Of the 39 members in the House Budget Committee (LA 1, CT 1, WI 2, AL 2, MI 1) only 7 come from states where the proponents of the Byrd ammendment voted yes.

Since, voting record indicates regional pattern instead of party pattern, I thought these numbers better reflect the situation in the Budget committe.

S. 1932 8001 / Physicians

I missed the last part of the vote on S. 1932. One person on this forum mentioned something about a "waiver" discussion in the debate. Did any of you hear any special provisions for J1 waiver (State Conrad-30) or National Interest Waiver Physicians in medically underserved areas.

PS Kudos to every one for their effort. I too personally contacted 98 senators. It is good to note that some senators like Specter who orginally replied "No" changed their mind in our favor after much lobbying.

Excel Spreadsheet

Can someone post an excel spreadsheet of phone & fax numbers for congressmen.. similar to the one posted earlier in this thread for senators ?

Let's rest later on!

Whom and what should we fax next ??????

can anybody sumarize the next steps ( with approximate dates ), I think it is probably as follows
1. contacting Representative of House, send letters, emails & faxes.
2. Finally a vote might be there
3. signature by president.

if so , can anybody post a letter format for fax & email ? if so we can go ahead & distribute widely among ourselves & peers. That can generate a stronger response.
