Thanks wantmygcnow for your suggestion. Don't think I can get a visa that fast from Indian Embassy, Washington D.C. Looks like they at least need 3 weeks to get it.

Do the interview, but if visa issues would be a problem, delay the oath until after you return so you can still use your current passport.

You can visa in 1-2 days as long as your paperwork is in order. Travisa (SFO) even let me generate a visa application with blank passport number, blank issue and expiry date since I wanted to print the documents before I left to collect my passport. They fixed it after submission. If you want to mail it in, add another 2-3 days but that's about it.

The last time I got Indian visa it took lees than a week, so it's certainly doable.
