Reentry Permit and validity of the Green Card

Hi all. If my GC expires in Dec 2009 (1.2 yrs) and reentry permit is issued for 2 yrs can I still apply and get one? Did anyone in the same situation applied for reentry permit and was able to get one?
 
The validity of your GC is not the same as your status. Your card may expire, but your status as a PR remains, just as you remain a citizen whether or not you have a valid passport. So, you should be able to get an RP.
 
The only thing you will need to watch is the narrow window in which USCIS prefers you to renew your new card (renew card, not status which is separate). You may have to do this thru the consulate if you are out-of-country.
