Question about TN visa support letter start date?

saucyyyyy

New Member
The lawyer my company hired sent me a TN visa support package letter with a start date of July 1, 2025 and I am planning to go to the Detroit Tunnel on June 30th to apply. I called the Detroit Tunnel and they confirmed there would be a CBP officer present to process TN applications.

My question is does the July 1, 2025 start date on the support letter raise any flags if I would be applying for the TN on June 30th? It meets the 10 day rule but my intention is to flagpole back to Canada after receiving TN and fly out to the US for my job a few weeks after. Would they question how it would be possible for me to start on July 1st?

Also, has anyone received a TN visa from the Detroit Tunnel recently and have any issues/tips? When I called the border they mentioned flagpoling is very common so I hope that shouldn't be an issue.

Will update you all on my TN experience but looking for your insight! TIA!

They could ask if they notice that you are going to "Flagpole" - the chances of which are minimal (unless you explicitly indicate). Yes, "flagpoling" is common but your start date is within 24 hours. It'd be best if you could go a week earlier.

A bit late to go a week earlier.:)
Shouldn't be an issue

As always, best not to have a start date on the letter, especially since there was no intention for you to start anywhere near July 1.

I actually had the original support letter with a no start date but rather a comment that "I would begin my temporary assignment upon issuance of a TN visa" and a duration of 3 years. I then got feedback (via Reddit) that a start date would be required or would be grounds for denial. I know you recommended not having a start date and that the TN visa gets issued the date it is approved, but I just don't want there to be any holes when I go to the border and the officer asks when I intent to start (i.e not applying too early before I would start, 10 day rule?).

I panicked and got the lawyer to send a revised letter for July 1st, considering I would be going to the Detroit Tunnel POE on June 30th. I could request an updated letter with a July 7th start date, thoughts? I feel I am overthinking this and getting spooked by online comments.
