Processing time for green card based on asylum

Hello everyone! Wanted to share my timeline as well. My case was approved relatively quickly . However, my husband’s and my son’s cases are still pending. 1730348860410.png

dude !!!!any attorney tells you that means you need to change him!!! YES many folks traveled with their cop passport and got in troubles in the citizenship test i know 2!!!! using cop passport means if you go overseas and got in trouble this country will deport you to your cop passport not the USA so tell me now how you're supposed to go back to the country you kept crying for them at the asylum interview that if you go your life is in dangerous? if you don't know what you are talking about please don't spread misinformation
1. I am a girl, so save your dude comments for your friends please and try to be respectful.
2. people are asking questions and if you want to help (what people are doing here) try to answer politely, not posting comments like "good luck when you apply for citizenship".
I also know people who traveled with their passports and had no issues. Not sure what your friends had to do to get in trouble in citizenship test or get deported oversees, but that's not what other people are trying to do here. Most people want to know how to travel after spending years without leaving the country and seeing their families and friends. So once again if you don't have any recommendations that do not include threats and disrespectful comments, please do not comment

Congratulations! That must have been stressful! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! It really was stressful, and I wasn't able to find anything reliable online regarding my situation.
Even asked my lawyer and she said to just wait it out.
I was restless until the card arrived in the mailbox.
I'm glad to share that there's a rainbow at the end of my case.

help by saying wrong info? yes, using COP passport is not something any experienced attorney will never favor it so you can go pay for a consultation and ask about it and if the attorney says do it then I'll pay you back but go get a good one not amateur one and also you can YouTube it and see!!!! the people i knew never had any issue before but only using COP passport and had to go through 2nd interview for that and also me myself when i travel with RTD last year the officer asked me twice have you ever renewed your COP passport or used it? the answer was no cause i really didn't ! even on the i-131 form the USCIS asks if you ever renewed your cop passport or no so we won't leave all the facts and go listen from someone like you or the other guy who have no idea about the immigration law!!!!! so when you for the citizenship test you will find out everything by yourself :) good luck again

I actually have to second Asylee11's opinion.
I received the same information from my immigration lawyer.

Yes, you can renew and use your COP passport to travel and get into the US back just fine.
BUT, you're gambling on the chance of passing your citizenship test.

After a long journey of getting my asylum approved, and finally green card in the mailbox,
do I want to gamble on something that I've been waiting so long for? My answer is NO.

I'd rather be save than sorry.

Personally, after so many years here (paying taxes, following the rules, incarcerated for years and years - not being allowed to leave the country); If I had a hard time on my citizenship process, I would definitely sue USCIS. It is not fair that they do not provide us a decent travel document in a decent processing time. Actually, everything is completely wrong with USCIS. Then I have to pay the price??? I will be posting their explanations about being an Asylee with GC and traveling abroad. There is no single line about not traveling with your home country passport.

I have to agree that the travel document is far from decent, but it is the safest route to take in my opinion.
At the end of the day it's still up to the individual's choice and action on which route they want to take.

I'm not holding a grudge against you personally; I was merely offering advice to help you avoid trouble, as we're all in the same situation. However, a single or few errors can land you in hot water with the USCIS, especially if President Trump is in office, making the immigration process even more challenging. They'll be on the lookout for any errors to jeopardize your citizenship application, and filing a lawsuit against USCIS won't be effective. The court lacks authority over USCIS, and their only recourse is to request a faster decision. Should the decision be unfavorable, filing a lawsuit won't change the outcome. Opting for a COP passport means you could face deportation back to your home country if you encounter issues abroad. So, what would you do then? Can you respond to a USCIS officer if they ask you about this? Providing clear and concise answers without any unnecessary words is key.
Using a COP passport for international travel is something you should steer clear of to prevent yourself from encountering a difficult and unsympathetic USCIS officer, which could lead to a lot of trouble.

Thank you. Why didn’t you apply for GC immediately after approval?
Didn’t know about this option or was afraid of denial if processing would be too quick?
Rather the second..didn’t want to take any risks at all … and all this hassle with not including the medicals seemed not worthy at all

Fact Sheet
Here is the official Fact Sheet at USCIS website. They are very clear about going back to your home country; How to travel as an Asylee; How to travel as a permanent resident through Asylum and even Pending Asylum. There is no mention at all about traveling with your home country passport. But anyways, good luck to you all and do whatever you think is better for yourself!

Hi, I just got my asylum approved on october 29, 2024. I’m planning to apply for RTD right away, and wait 5-6 months to apply for GC. Does it make any difference to apply for RTD before having a pending GC Application? Or should I wait until I file for AOS? Thanks in advance.

all i am trying to say is that if you think my answer was wrong, then try to write an answer respectfully. you could have just given an explanation and told what you went through not telling people "Good luck" when you don't mean it. we are all here in the same boat and not looking for fights or assaults in our direction. i didnt know they ask you that question about renewing your COP, so good to know!

has anyone here renewed their RTD? I mean applied for a new one? if traveling with your COP is risky as people say then can someone tell about their experience getting the new one? like how long in advance can you reapply  Thank you!
