Parent's Health Insurance

There are many who oppose the chain migration of parents due to the medical care costs that are imposed on the country for individuals who have never made any contribution to the US. No worker is so important that he cannot be done without; if parents are so important, he can return to his country of birth and live with his parents.

If USA wants highly skilled/trained foreign workers, scientists, nurses et all to stay leader of the free world, associated family members need to be assimilated in to the system. USA gives billions of dollars of aid to many countries outside USA. There is a bigger picture than what an average citizen sees.
There is always a cost of acquiring skilled man power, leadership position, concensus, votes in UNO.
There should not be any problem whatsoever with parents who are ready to pay reasonable price for medical coverage
People ARE going to out of USA to get medical treatment when they need it and can travel.
Those who can not take care of parents in USA are taking them back. No issue at all.

By the way, many native born US citizens are without insurance.

Why is it so, is it because they don't have kids willing to PAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY for their medical coverage?
or did they not contribute into medicare for whole of their life? why not? what were they doing for the whole life so far?
Are they expecting free mediacl coverage being USA citizens. Ohh my god.
This is getting very interesting.

Why should they continue to forego heath care so that someone who chooses to come to the US can have it.

Why are they not getting medical coverage?
Work, pay into medicare and earn medical coverage is the simple formula or BUY IT.
Stick to your own children, raise them PROPERLY that they will PAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY for medical coverage.
One can not blame for not having medical coverage on NEWWW immigrants check your own medicare subscription record.
What are you doing for so many genarations that there is no medical coverage.
Why didn't you pay medicare?
Where did anybody read that any 'new' immigrant is eating away share of 'old' immigrants.

Many like my family members who have no way to get health insurance have more than 10 generations of US born ancestors on one side of the family,

I wonder why there is no way to get health coverage after spending 10 generations. Now I am worried about all such people.
Why are you blaming others for not having medical coverage?
Nobody has ever heard of USA goverment not providing service to mainstream/existing citizens before they implement any program for 'new' immigrants.
This is turning out to be a digression from main topic here. EveryOne needs to find out the perils of current medical system and write to senators.

so do not give me the line that these new GC parents "deserve" it because of the contributions of their children who have likely been in the US less than 15 years

GC parents deserve medical coverage at reasonable price like any other parent in this country residing LEGALLY. If GC parents have not contributed then they will pay more but not UNREASONABLE. May be GC parents will spend time in correcting the medical system instead of wasting time

Concerned4US: I saw on C-SPAN that US government has wasted billions of dollars on SCAM projects in the current war.

That may be true, but the scope of unfunded medical liabilities dwarfs that of all wars the US has ever fought. Medicare is said to have a $30+ trillion unfunded liability. There is simply no way we can afford to give affordable health care to our overweight, unhealthy population. Can't be done - it's like the promise of a GM pension. A worthless IOU.

Even if we magically make US health care as efficient as foreign models and cut costs by 40%, we're still faced with an $18 trillion dollar liability. It's such a huge number that the only way to fix it is to promise fewer services.

There's no way that elderly parents can get affordable health insurance in a model that makes any sort of actuarial sense, just like they cannot get affordable life insurance. I don't see this as a competetiveness problem either, if one cannot afford to pay an extra $1,500 a month for your parents' health care, you are by definition not part of the best and brightest (or at least not paid that way.)

What are the leaders, senators, common citizens of this great country doing while the problem has grown into 30 trillion. Are the citizens asking right questions? raising concerns that legal residents of this country are not able to afford reasonably priced medical care? Does one think by not having discussion on forums somehow this problem will be solved automatically?
Does one think this problem is SOOOOOOOOOO big that it can NEVER EVER be solved. Only if common citizen puts pressure on the leaders this problem can be solved. ( see what common citizen is doing in Iran at the moment for example) Putting five fingers in mouth and showing mesmarizing and blowing the problem is not going to help either.

Nothing is impossible if there is will, leadership, awareness.

Consumer is the king if he is aware, focussed.
Internet , online marketplace has brought the costs down for everything. Some class of people always think they are entitled to FREE easy and big money. People who make commission on every gallon of gas sold in this country by employing zoning laws making people drive cars rather than walk, people who lead oligapoly by setting insurance prices in medical industry, govt. leaders who support tobacco companies sponsoring their election funds, people who make money on wars, killing innocent people, people who create false pictures for masses are responsible for this. This is 2009. We can make the change if we want to and if we believe in the positive.
If we have to walk 1000 miles, we have to take the first step.

What are the leaders, senators, common citizens of this great country doing while the problem has grown into 30 trillion. Are the citizens asking right questions?

The leaders were lying to the population, and the population wants to be lied to.

The lie is that you can pay $200/month for health insurance that gives you access to $200,000 procedures. That you can take lousy care of yourself and still pay the same low rates as someone healthy. That there is no moral hazard. People want to hear that they can have everything to day and not pay for it.

The economy shows that this is unsustainable. If you want 1970s prices for health care, you can get 1970s health care.

Internet , online marketplace has brought the costs down for everything.

Even if you cut the costs of health care by 50 or 60 percent across the board, it's still going to be extremely expensive. There's no getting around that, and it's a problem that every Western nation faces.

In Canada health care is swallowing every extra provincial revenue dollar. Britain threw tens of billions of pounds into the NHS without results. You can say all sorts of nice slogans, but the fact remains that $200,000 procedures will never be affordable.

Health insurance works on one basic principle : whatever I pay to health insurance for the remaining of estimated life should cover costs of any health problems that I might have. It is a zero sum game. If I am 70 years old and my life expectancy is 80 years, then the insurance company has 10 years/120 months to recover and costs of any medical procedure that I am likely to undergo. If the costs of average medical procedure(s) that a 70 year old person undergoes is $100000 then the insurance should charge you $10000 per year. Of course the insurance also has to make money therefore it is likely to collect at least $120000 from you which works out to $1000 per year.

The question then is why does it cost so much to get medical attention? One main reason is the cost of malpractice insurance. An average doctor pays upto $100K per year as premium for malpractice insurance. This is due to people sueing for for millions of dollars for all kinds of inane reasons (and our court system and laws have allowed this to happen). This is one place to cut medical insurance costs - set limits on damages in medical malpractice suits.

Unfortunately no one in the present administration is talking about this elephant in the room.

Unfortunately no one in the present administration is talking about this elephant in the room.

I agree with everything else said. It's all for profit only, so I order some medications in Canada, for example - they are 30% cheaper there.

However I heard on last meeting of Obama with doctors, hospitals and such he was talking about putting limits on claims. The insurance doctors have to pay is simply ridiculous.

Medicare question

New to the group and I need help. My Dad has had his GC for # of years but never stayed for 5 years continuously to qualify for medicare. I'm willing to buy into medicare ( Part A and B) but I'm told that enrolment is done in june and july only. Is this correct? Anyone out there with an answer.

Tricare

Regarding the original question:

If you are active-duty military, you can enroll your entire family (including dependent parents and parents-in-law) in TRICARE. There are various different plans, but basically for very low co-pays and deductibles, you and your family can get excellent medical care at both military and civilian facilities.

Medicare requires 10 years of working and paying Medicare taxes, but those 10 years don't have to be continuous and don't have to be as a permanent resident (however the individual must be a permanent resident or citizen at the time of receiving Medicare benefits). But if one spouse did the necessary amount of work to qualify for Medicare, both are considered qualified (provided they are both old enough) regardless of whether the other spouse worked the 10 years or not.

Planning to take this insurance for my mom

I called these guys http://www.americashealthbrokers.com and they said they will provide insurance for parents, for 229$/month, that includes Medical, dental & vision. Pre existing condition is allowed. No SSN for parents required. Has anyone used them before?

Hi Realcanadian

I am not sure what do you mean by co-insurance level? Should I ask that question to the insurance company, they never mentioned anything about it, in my preliminary conversation?

Co-insurance = the amount you will be required to pay. Also they may pay a much smaller amount than the doctors charge based on "resonable and customary" or "Medicare approved" amounts which are much less than the amount charges to others.

In addition to co-insurance and deductibles, what is their maximum limit on coverage (annual or lifetime)? It's not of much use if the policy will pay a max of $20K but your parent needs a $100K surgery.

Also, find out if the policy is guaranteed renewable, and if so until what age. If it is not guaranteed renewable, they can decide not to renew the policy of somebody who gets sick or injured.

Guys,

The cheap becomes expensive in the end. I am still convinced that cheap people have damaged this world, followed by greedy people who have no morals.

In reading the brick throwing on health care debate above, I am shocked to see how many people here are shells for insurance companies crap. There is no insurance company which is in the business of losing money. if a procedure cost $250K, the insurance company will always find a way not to pay for it, and stick the bill to the patient. Minorities have it worst when it comes to medical procedures in this country. I recently had a dermatologist bill declined by my insurance co, and they refused to pay a mere $90. I would like anyone on this board to tell me, how would they afford to pay for a $500 000 procedure if they don't have the balls to pay a $90 routine visit costs?

concerned4Us is a misguided soul in my own opinion. I find that the American population to be so pathetic and ignorant. About 70% of these people have never been outside the US, but can opine on how bad other health care systems are... but you have never being a subject or patient of that country. Insurance industries, bankers and drug companies own all these congressional members. American people are ripped off on a day-to-day basis by these companies which basically get whatever they want, whereas ignorant hillibillies rant against immigrants destroying their country. Tort reform is a smoke screen for the republicans, if a doctor left your own mother to die because he couldn't give her a drug that could have saved her life, would you tell the doctor, oh...it was a mistake and I understand, have a nice life and kill another patients? Of course NOT, lawsuits are the foundation of this country and shouldn't limited by some old nut who has been in Congress when the pope was still an alter boy, absolutely NOT!! What is going to be capped next? car damages? Please... People are killed by negligent actions of professionals on a daily basis, and if you protect these people from facing costly legal actions, then you are freeing them to do more damage.

concerned4us: You 10 generations aren't denied the opportunity to buy health insurance by any immigrants, are they? Simple matter: $$$ rule

It may not be a scam, but I highly doubt it and I really don't like the words "We Guarantee You Coverage". It doesn't say "We Guarantee You FULL Coverage". Also does it give the list of doctors/facilities? May be they guarantee, BUT they have no doctors/labs/hospitals "in networks" meaning you can't go anywhere...

When I was looking for insurance for someone around 60 years old the cheapest one I could find was at
https://carefirst.inshealth.com/ehi/Alliance?allid=CAR27748

The cheapest one is $78.00/month, BUT with $10000 deductible. $223.00 is with $1000 deductible (which is NOT bad). But again they LOOK for preconditions and don't take sick people in. :(

SSK,

You are about to get your butt handed to you on a silver platter... with salami.... This company is a rip-off and if you ever want to do business with anyone, just google complaints against them. I did some research for you, because I understand how important it is for you to get insurance for you parents, but you aren't exempt from using common sense. If something sounds too good to be true, then it is usually a bunch of bull...:p why people were ripped off in the Madoff scheme is because the bought into a lie and believe the crappola of 12% return annually, out of line with stock market returns....:) In your case, you have a decision to make, do you think this company is going to pay for a chemo treatment of $65000 when you only put down $229 per month? Are you kidding me or are you that gullible? They don't need a SSN? Please.... Lastly, do you know what a broker does? The names is America's Health Brokers...so, who is brokering this insurance coverage?

To get affordable insurance for a parent over 60 who isn't eligible for Medicare, you will need to accept some restrictions, such as:

- High deductible, like $7500 or $10000
- 20 to 30% co-insurance, with an out of pocket maximum of $10K to $20K
- low lifetime limit ($2 million or less)

If you accept those limitations and your parents are healthy, something for under $400/month per person is possible. Visit a broker in your area and see what they can find.
