Updated 01/12/2002: Bad News for NVC IV Applicants (Chennai Post)

We reported yesterday the problem of nonimmigrant visa revalidation problem as affected by the Anthrax decontamination.
Now, DOS has released information to the AILA that the people who applied for immigrant visas, both family-based and employment-based, are stuck in the anthrax decontamination problem. Unlike other consulates, the American Consulate in Chennai does not process any immigrant visa applications unless the original approval notice of I-130 or I-140 and files are forwarded to the consulate directly by the National Visa Center. These documents are forwarded by NVC to the consulates via diplomatic pouch through the DOS Postal Station, but as reported yesterday, 100,000 mails in the DOS postal station are stuck for the anthrax decontamination. This included over 2,000 diplomatic pouches that needed to go the U.S.diplomatic missions!
Since Chennai requires "original" I-797 I-130 or I-140 approval notices, currently the immigrant visa applicants in Chennai jurisdiction are completely stuck. Reportedly, the NVC has printed their records and is sending them to Chennai via DHL. However, since Chennai requires "original" I-797, the IV applicants are stuck.
Following is the list of NVC IV cases for Chennai post which are stuck. Unless Chennai changes its policy, the people on this list may have to come up with another "original" I-797 and the attorney certified copies of I-130 or I-140 petition and supporting documentation.

manbird - dont worry

My opinion, the AILA information which reached immigraiton-law.com must be a bit old, at the time when Chennai may not yet have taken decision to accept this. I am sure since we got interview dates this time, they are not repeating the same story again, and they have accepted our cases.

Definitely but for our efforts (the 10-12 of us) we wouldnt have been out of this mess. Be Optimistic, but then again it may be a good idea to call / e-mail Chennai and clearly clarify this.

Gabbar/Manbird

I think the development we know of is more recent and this website is not updated with the information that Chennai has accepted papers sent from NVC. What do you think?

I have also received one mail from Chennai confirming my date a few minutes after they confirmed my date on phone.

Gabbar007, where did you get this message.

Hi Gabbar007, where did you get this message? Coud you post the site address.

THank you.

Just called chennai and got the interview date. Its on Feb 15th.

Guys, I have a question, If we get a PCC from the Indian Consulate General in the US, then still do we need to get a PCC from the regional passport office in India or are they both equivalent??.
Thanks

gappl, my date is also 2/12

Travel plans as yet? Please let me know when you are planning to leave. Also what about PCC?

Guys, we need to send a note of thanks to Kathy Walker

I don\'t think we would be talking about an interview but for her. I think all of us need to thank her for her help.

I suggest we all send messages email or snail mail to her thanking her. What do yall think?

I had already booked tickets via BA for Jan.

So I am stuck with that airlines. I am trying to get tickets for 1st Feb from here.

Why isn\'t any one trying Indian Airlines?

Is there a problem with Indian Airlines. They are very cheap and readily available. Please let me know if there are any problems with that airlines.

Thank you.

gcappl - i am on the same boat.

Nova Travels.

Guys,

I have blocked tickets for Indian Airlines from Chicago to Chennai for $998 + $80(taxes). The flight is via London and Mumbai. No need to change airport in Mumbai. Customs can be done in Chennai. Any one aware of better airlines.
